What do you guys think? I know we used to do this.
Obviously we have drummerworld
http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Brian_Blade.html
but sometimes I feel, though it is a great site, it lacks a lot (obviously one guy doesn't have infinite time to be tweaking each page)
if we did this, which I think would be cool, there should be some minimum requirements:
- No copying/pasting from other sources... actually write something out for yourself pertaining the the player's background
- Discuss their style, technique, sound and influences
- Post their setup/how it's changed over the years
- Give at least 10 different listening examples with some explanation for each
- Post any transcriptions you have or have written yourself
- Tell how they have influenced you and what you draw from their playing
I'm thinking detailed profiles that take time to make here, not just pasting a bunch of pictures of a player and copying a bio from wikipedia or drummerworld. Make it personal.
I don't know, it could be a good idea or not. Just a thought.
Edit: Also we could obviously extend this to include percussionists, which I know would be cool to have someone like Amit do one on Zakir or Charlie could pick someone, as I know he is a percussionist also.

Sounds like a plan. The FAs we used to have were decent, I suppose.

I like it. My vote is yes.
How about sharing little rumours or stories you've heard about the artist like Bernard Purdie claiming to have recorded some of the Beatles tracks or the one about Vinnie Colaiuta playing his pad whilst speaking with a friend...?

My vote is YES. I'd love to be a part of something like this. Count me in.

Think he'd do an online interview for us?

I doubt it
but it would be sweet! ^_^
I bet I could get some of the cats around here to do a little interview, though sometime... Mangini, Dicenso, Morgenstein, etc.

this is definitely a cool idea. information about famous drummers exists elsewhere (drummerworld, wikipedia) but it does not have that personal touch you're talking about.

Well, I also find, no offense to berhard of course because he does a great job, that a lot of the information on drummer world is outdated, or there is very little provided for certain artists.
It contains more pictures than anything.

very true. my observations:
drummerworld - best for photos and audio
wikipedia - best for up to date information
if only those sources could be combined!

I was the only one (so far) to say no, but i don't care if you do it, so go ahead.

I would like to see more bio's on the lesser known artists.
If this happens, i'm calling Magnus Ostrom from EST.

Who is EST?

Esbjorn Svensson Trio.
Some amazing drumming going on in there. Not your average stuff either, really really individual player, Magnus is. Very musical.

The new month is approaching, and I will post a featured artist article by the 1st.
In other news, I have created a group Putfile account that we can all share to host audio and video files for these featured artist articles. It would be much appreciated if you included some mp3s or video clips of your featured artist with your write up, so we can all share this putfile account to make it simple for people who haven't used file hosting sites before. Putfile seems to be the best, IMO, as it offers links that you can click and hear/watch what the file is, rather than having to download it.
The putfile account name is: MXDrum
password: drumming15
thanks!

Good work Cam...looking forward to it. One question: do we have to watch what we post on Putfile? I'm wondering specifically about copyrighted clips or recordings.
wesm9787
04-27-2007, 02:43 PM
^^ No you can't put anything up that is copyrighted. I'm not sure what specifically counts as copyrighted material and what doesn't though...

Technically, you are not supposed to post copyrighted audio on putfile. But I don't think its a huge deal. I think no one will notice and we could even take it down when each month is over. If you think it is too much of a risk, we can scrap the idea. I just thought it would be a good way of sharing some educational material.

So the first featured artist is up!
