View Full Version : ...I officially HATE water.

So last night, still going into today, my area in New Jersey has expirienced SEVERE rainfall. I live about 80 yards from a river. usually, when floods occur, the farthest it ever gets is before the shed (maybe about 50 yards from my house.)
well last night tredding in balls deep water for an hour and a half helping blockade my neighbors house from the flood (it just rained about 10" in about 4 hours) and all our work did nothing, because their house is completely under now.
All the time, we were just ignorant to the fact that the water was going to hit our house.
So i came back, and at about 10 oclock, the water was past the shed, and furthest i have ever seen it. so the first thing i thought about was to get my drums the hell out of the garage. so i moved my drums upstairs from the garage.
so i wake up this morning, and the water is in my garage, and has flooded my downstairs.
i am very lucky i thought of my drums, but i forgot all about my sticks and pad and books. i havent checked them... but i am sure they are ruined.
i am such a mess right now.

Do you have home content insurance? If the worst happened (your drums going under) then you should be insured on them. Depending on your policy of course.
Lucky you got them out the way anyway!

Really sorry to hear that. I lost three drum kits in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. At least you had the presence of mind to save the kit. Sorry for you neighbors too.

my parents were too naive to get flood insurance =/ they just never thought that a 50 foot wide river could expand almost 100 yards uphill... which isn't totally unreasonable.
but when this is declared a national disaster (which it will, because this is the worst that has happened to this area of new jersey flood wise ever recorded) we will get some monetary help.

A rainny night my grandma's basement flooded. Ok not too much. Just 3-4 cm water all over the place. Just enough to be able to damage pedals.
Thank god I went to play the following day and I realized what had happened. I emidiately brought my drums in a safe place near the heating. Eventually the pedals were dry after a few hours without any damage.
My sticks and a book got wet too, but I let them on the hear and they "recovered".

I live in NJ too! There had to be at least four inches of water in our basement, (I know that's nothing compared to Zep and many others, as we live at relatively high elevation) and I had to move my drums to shelves and my bass drum on top of the ironing board. The whole set, too, because all the stands were on rubber mats and there was enough water to get them floating. I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to you. At least we got a day off of school.

umm, what about your bass drum??? water will warp the wood and distort the sound... you should make sure it didn't do that.
and whimskill, where in new jersey are you??
does anyone want pictures? i just took them.

driveway leading to garage. it is deeper in the garage, because it is like a bowl effect for some reason.

my downstairs. it would be probably 6 inches deeper if we didn't blackade the door with towels.

oh damn. We get insain snow up here so I know a thing or two about flooding. Its great that you thought ahead and get your drums up to some saftey. Now get them insured. My drums, my dad's guitar collection, mom's paino is insured threw our home insurance. Thats at least $25,000 of stuff right there (my dad has a 1959 les paul, probably 10,000 right there)

so we completely ripped up the carpet in our downstairs. luckily, the only thing that really got damaged was the floor/ carpet, and some junk that was on the ground in the garage. and we swept the water out, because the river subsided, and we were able to borrow a pool pump, and pump out the majority of the water, and sweep out the excess.
thanks for the kind words guys. hopefully i can get everything back to normal in a few weeks.
At least everything isn't on fire.
sure =/

Yo dude! We got a bit here too. Nothing quite like you though! In 2000 though we got 22 in of rain. Crazy **** went down there. We had mudslides, 4 bridges go out etc. Everything just went back to normal after that. Glad your drums are ok though.
Edit: To whim: I'm in Sussex county.

that's at least a little better.
my house flooded during a construction project, where silt clogged a drainage ditch and backed up in a big storm, leaving my basement in 2" of mud. we didn't have flood insurance and the construction company denied fault. we rebuilt at a loss and our basement smells like mold always now. It's bad. really bad. if you're around MN for whatever reason your family is welcome to stay at my place.
at least you're getting some money back!

how long does it take for water go away after a flood?
the water level? maybe a week. standing water puddles maybe 2-3 weeks. the water that's soaked into your carpet, furniture, walls, papers, clothes, etc -- never.

Sorry to hear about that. I never had a flood but one time when I lived with my mom in a condo the people next door had some plumbing issues where the sewage pipe broke or something. So we had a few inches of raw sewage and human feces completely covering our floor for a few days. Couldn't go downstairs until the maintainance people came and cleaned it up for fear of getting hepatitis. Anyway hope everything works out.

thanks man, a lot. really, i appreciate it.
and right now, im not even sure if they are going to call it, and we might not get much help. i only think this because they might be complete assholes and not do anything, because the water level receded extremely fast yesterday and tonight, the water is down to the back of my shed this morning. so they might argue how it was not as severe as it was described.
but yeah, thanks guys for all your kind words, my downstairs is doing a good job drying.
