Hey guys i'm so confused...
I think i've decided on maple. So even though the M birch has got the free tom and is great value, i think i'll go for Quality>Quantity.
Sizes will be 12,14,16. 22 Kick and whatever snare is in the "XPK Heavy Rock" Pack or the "Crossover 22".
The Mapex comes with the Black Panther snare which im sure is nice, but is the kit as good sounding as the Premier?
Thanks for all the comments to come :p

the premier sounds good (i own one) but i personally like the mapex kick sound better. the premier has a very hollow kick sound. also the premiers hardware is a new level of ****..

Hardware crap?
And Bass drum hollow?
Are you using any muffling in the kick? apparently it desperatly needs some...
Want to do a more elaborative review for me?
Thanks

how about that? because of the exhange rate, it comes out quite cheap....(cheaper than aus pro m, xpk..)
Is that far better?
Thanks

Although I love my pro m, the black pnther would seal the deal for me.
Im desperate for one of those puppys

if everyone is going for it, then maybe it is just that good?
Has anyone had experience with the PDP?

lol....ahhh
my friend has an pro m, but says he'd rather get a free tom (m birch) then the snare :|
I think i'd rather a good sounding 5 piece than a **** sounding 6 piece..
It might also be, he doesnt want me to have a better kit than him :P

The wood choice is a much more significant factor than the "free" tom,...the free tom is a little piddly-*** 8" anyway right? If you wanted to buy on e extra it probably cost not much more than the tax on the the entire kit. Think about it for a second.
I was not aware that "everyone else" played mapex kits.

do you have an opinion on XPK vs Pro M Jive?

I don't know much about either of those kits, to be honest.
I believe the Pro Ms are professional level, but I'm not totally sure how they differ from Orions. It's kind of like the thing with Sonor Delites and Sonor SQ2,...both are pro level, but somehow different, in that one series is a lot more custom than the other.
Greg Bissonette, who ususally plays orions, I think was using a little Pro M kit in his DVD when he was playing jazz.
PS
Quality is always better than quantity. Unless you're talking numbers in your bank account.

It's more like 3005 to the Delites.

Pro M's are in no way proffesional at all.

How do you work that out?

For a start, chances are it's probably chinese maple, the hardware is low quality, I've never seen a professional use one.
I could probably go a lot further but I'm trying to Detox myself from Mapex hating.
Now you explain why it's a professional kit...

Well for a start if you look at the hardware it isn't low quality, the mounting system is good, everything is functioning and you assume that it uses chinese maple but who gives a damn it sounds good.
It has many features of a pro kit.
You've never seen a professional use one because professionals can afford to buy higher level kits.

It's a *very* good MID level kit, just as the 3005 is(albeit, the 3005 owns it)

The mapex hardware on all the Pro M's i've seen isn't even knurled, and most of it isn't even double braced.
The mounting system poor, especially the L rods, which look like they're gonna snap, and you might as well make the kit out of poplar or Luan if you're gonna make it of Chinese maple.
A Pearl export has features of a pro kit, but you wouldn't associate one with pro....
It's not a pro kit, it's a student kit. It's built to cut corners on cost by using lower grade materials and sub standard quality manufacture.

You keep believing that, a pearl export has features of a beginner kit.
Also all my hardware was knurled and double braced with my m birch, when i upgraded it I used all mapex stands because they were so good. The mounting system is better than what tama and pearl use on their top kits.
Pro M's are built well, the only corner that is truely cut is the heads.

Fair enough, they're built well, but they're still not classed as pro kits.
And really about the hardware? All the stuff I've seen come with M's is single braced and unknurled.
And that's a slightly hypocritical statement saying "you keep believing that the export has some of the features of a pro kit".

Chris Pennie - Dillinger Escape Plan
Mike Novak - Every Time I Die
The Pro M's have the same mounting system as the orions, and the M Birches and the Saturns. Sturdy as hell...

From the Mapex website:
"Each Pro M set comes with a full complement of double-braced Mapex Hardware"

Sounds like the EDIT - Pro M might be the way to go then!
I'll try grab some US prices cos you guys have it so much better :P
Thanks for all the input thus far! Any more comments or reviews much appreciated!

damo proved that there is nothing wrong with starcast. i would find the test to back my point that he did, but i'm lazy.
also, do you really need that extra tom? cause another tom will usually mean more heads which means that there is more expense required, and also if you ever intend to gig, you'll need more mic's and so forth. another thing is, will that tom get extra use?

So you choose the M Birch over the Pro M? Why? Because you get one more tom?
Seems to me that you have no idea what you want and you just focus on things such as price and quantity as opposed to quality and those tiny details that make all the difference. Do some research and figure out what you want for things such as wood type, mounting, sizes, etc. and then ask us.

Actually he originally was trying to decide between the M Birch and whatever the XPK pack is.
To Dakwota: I would say look into the Pro M's as well if you're looking at getting one. Give yourself some options. Like George said, research it a bit. You might even look into some other brands. Shop around online, look at prices, etc. Although if you're set on getting either the M Birch or the XPK, then I have no idea what to tell you because I don't know anything about the XPK pack.

I use the extra tom, I want more toms really.
I don't bother with tom mics, overheads pick up my toms great, no need for muffling or anything.
Anyway you can't proove a mounting system is better than another, it's opinion.
I just believe that pearl and tama suck in the ways of mounts.

Ahh ****.
I meant the Pro M, but i wasn't thinking when i posted that.....i've edited it now..
Mainly in this thread i've been talking about Quality over Quantity, so i would'nt be going for the M Birch..
Also, I think in the first post I (or meant to) wrote that I wat 10", 12", 14", 16" (14 and 16 floor toms 14x14, 16x16)...so i do sort of know what I want...
I can't seem to see a package that will really fit me in Pro M series, but maybe thats because i'll need to order them seperately... Which means i'll need to buy more mounts and things, but my drum teacher said dont buy wrong sizes cos its not in the package....(like make sure you buy the sizes you want.)
Sorry about the confusion, i was half asleep :P
User reviews of Pro M would be nice too!

There's virtually no difference in quality between pro-m and m-birch, it's just that one is made of birch and the other maple.
Did you try looking here for the set-ups you can get?

Yeah i've mainly looked on mapex's actual site...
I think i'll try grab the "22 Crossover" and pay for the extra 10" + a mount for it..
Looks pretty shmick~!
Oh damn, on mass music they're doing that exact set up (22 crossover with a free 10") atm, might have to see if they'll ship out to australia....
Oh, and their prices arent really that good...
