I'm sure there are some fans of the genre here. Discuss.

The main reason for me making the thread is that I want to look into the genre further. I've got the well known essentials like Maxinquaye, Dummy, Mezzanine and Endtroducing but I was wondering where else to look. Any help would be much appreciated.

Royksopp are pretty good, Air - their latest is Pocket symphony.
Morcheeba I've heard a bit of and I like, and Lamb I haven't but have been recommended.

Try Fagan and the Sneaker Pimps.
Maybe also Boards of Canada, Dälek, and Black Cherry/Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp.
Oh, and try UNKLE as well.

Nadinus

Boards of Canada? I didn't think they were trip hop 0.o
Oh well same sort of music :/

munky_magik

Boards are more sort of chilled/ambient stuff but he may enjoy them anyway.
Dälek are more sort of alternative hip-hop but have the odd trip-hop part.

Just bands that he might like, it's always good to check out new music :)

Boards of Canada are freakin' awesome, and so is Dalek. Bjork can be pretty trippy-hoppy, and is also brilliant.

I like Motherless Child, with Tom Jones. And most people have heard Glory Box.

I've only got Shadow's Endtroducing, but I'll have a listen to Private Press.

Leftfield's second album touches on trip hop, as well as CocoRosie.

I've got Music Has The Right To Children, and it's great.

Thievery Coorporation have some good stuff.

Also make sure to check out The Private Press by DJ Shadow because it's superior to Endtroducing....
Thievery Corporation are really good. The Richest Man In Babylon is the one I have, it's great.

and I like The Private Press but I wouldn't go that far :o

I've only got Shadow's Endtroducing, but I'll have a listen to Private Press.

Trip-hop is a genre i've been meaning to more fully explore. Albums i own -

Massive Attack - Protection, Mezzanine
Portishead - Dummy
Tricky - Maxinquaye

I think its interesting how Protection & Maxinquaye recycle some of the same lyrics, because Tricky left Massive Attack halfway through recording that album or something (can someone confirm this?). I prefer Tricky's stuff, it's so dark.

As for other trip-hop artists, Roots Manuva? Lovage?

Wikipedia to the rescue, i be following this list i think. :smoke:

This isn't a trip-hop album but I'd also recommend Flying Lotus' 1983. Musically it sounds like a combination of Aphex Twin and DJ Shadow, interesting stuff that you'd probably enjoy.

Amon Tobin (rather agressive, more towards drum 'n bass but awesome nonetheless)

Rounds is an awesome album.

From Wiki:

Four Tet is the name used by Kieran Hebden for his electronic music-oriented solo efforts to differentiate from his work with post-rock band Fridge.

It's got elements of bristol-style trip hop, but also the Air breed of trip hop, some psychedelia, and tons of catchiness. It's basically awesome pop music.

Oh hey, what about the Fight Club OST? Pretty good (and slightly incoherent as OST's often are) music. It's by a duo that call themselves The Dust Brothers. It's got some pretty awesome vignettes that sort of fit the trip hop mold in a way.

Fight Club soundtrack is awesome. The Dust Brothers also did the Seven soundtrack, remixing closer for the title sequence (great title sequence that it is)

I can upload the basic album, but if anyone has the special edition some of the remixes are really good.

I sort of lost interest about half way through the album. it's very disjointed, but there are definitley some gold moments. Reminded me of a film soundtrack in the way that each musical idea was so seperated from the last and also in the lack of development of each idea.

But still enjoyable.

The only Anticon album that blew me away was Alias & Ehren's Lillian.

One of Lillian's most important features is its use of space. Its lush soundscapes benefit as much from densely-populated time signatures as they do from the moments of calculated hesitation. Ehren’s superbly played clarinet shines most on “Miso Stomp,” where a spaciously played riff accompanies Alias’ jagged synth line. Perhaps Ehren’s best contribution to the record is his confidence; his instrumentation evokes the poise of a seasoned musician who eschews the spotlight of a solo to explore the stream of consciousness that is Alias' intricate compositional style.

The record moves like an experimental film score, with seemingly motionless drones in spots complementing driving, crunchy beats at other times. Alias’ drum programming nods in the direction of DJ Signify and DJ Krush – both experts in the field – the way dusty kicks and dirty snares scatter towards analog cohesion. The title track’s heavily delayed beeps and clicks speckle in and out of focus while Ehren’s saxophone smoothes out the fuzz, pulling the track’s elements in tighter with a contemplative hand.
