Hey,

To The North
http://www.binbag-css.co.uk/carl/jambam/To%20The%20North.mp3

Written, played and recorded by me and a friend (with two crappy mics!)
It's me on drums and my friend on guitar.

This is the second time we've played the song properly (as in, the whole way through for a recording) so it still needs some work! (I must add that we are aware of the minor mistakes we both made during the song :p )

Please let me know what ya'll think =]

Nice sound for 2 mics, (i'm assuming its 1 mic for guitar, one for the entire kit).... Nice mic placement for the drums as you get a good cross section of the kit and there isn't any single drum thats too loud over the rest.

The song itself, I really think you have a strong basis for a good song here... It sounds like its just calling for a good vocal melody with some harmonies in there. Needs a good bass line in there too, but its a great start.

Do you have any vocals in there for it written or is it just an instrumental?

If not... you should put out a challenge for people to download the track and write/record some vocals to the song... see who comes up with the best one :)

Thanks for the kind comments and advice Crowley =]
Regarding the mics: we placed one on either side of the drum kit (thus covering the whole kit) and the guitar amp was faced centrally towards the kit (thus being picked up by both mics). I don't like the sound of my snare that much though, it needs sorting.

We do have a bassist who is currently writing the bass line. We also have a singer who's hoping to write some lyrics for it, but we don't know if and when that'll happen. I'll probably take your advice though and put out a challenge for people to write some lyrics; good idea :D

Thanks again. If anyone else has some comments I'd love to hear them too!

nice melodic tune. like the guitar a lot. the chord progression really evolves beautifully. the drumming is simple, but very tight. should'a mixed it a bit different though. or at least make it mono. it's a wee bit obvious that it's one mic on each side of the drum kit - and it's just a wee bit annoying :p

the overall sound (not the sound quality of the recording, but the composition's overall feel and atmosphere and so on) is really cool. quite special. and I don't know if I wanna hear it with vocals and bass :p
I really like it the way it is. I'd love to hear a whole album with this, haha. but I'll be waiting for that next recording - with bass & vox.

PS
the second time 'round - the mix wasn't all that annoying. it kind'a adds a bit to the sound picture. took me a little while to get into it, but now that I have - I realise that I was an idiot for trying to convince you to make it mono. it works amazingly well the way it is now :D

rating: 4/5.
