I hate having to make a thread like this but i have no choice, i've been trying to get a good tone out of the p pickup in my spector but i just cant do it, it always sounds muddy. I'm going for a pretty generic p-bass tone like what you hear in a lot of hip hop. I've been messin with my EQ for hours trying to get it right but it just sounds like crap. I'm using a Spector NS-2 with Bartolini P/J pickups and a 3-band eq into a Hartke bass attack preamp into a Laney BC-120. This is the first bass i've had with a p pickup so i dont know how to get this sound although i dont think the pickups are the problem because the Jazz pickup sounds imaculate. Any help?

That's kinda strange, actually. Set everything flat. That's what I do with my P and it sounds like a P is supposed to sound.

buy my G&L p-bass?

in all seriousness.... set the eq on your bass flat, then cut some highs and boost the mids a wee bit on your bass. then do the same on your amp. if all else fails....

buy my p-bass.
