I love his playing, makes me want to get a piccolo bass (and improve my playing a million times)

I've been thinking of making my old OLP which I never play anymore into a piccolo/midi bass.

Yeah, I've been planning to make it into a midi bass for aaages though (since I knew I was possible really, and then even more when I heard 'The modern bass guitar' by Squarepusher), so who knows when I actually will. I want to find someone who knows a bit about midi basses to chat to before I do it.

Hahaha, yeah. I have no idea how to do it. I'd really like to learn anyway.

Midi is great, I love making midi loops on keyboard then jamming over them.

Uh, maybe you've only listened to cheesy internet MS-windows built in sampled midi background tracks, but you've clearly no idea of what midi is capable of.

Yeah it depends on the soundcard/synth for the sounds you get.

Exactly. Midi isn't sound, its just data (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) that can control various sound sources in real time or added to a recorded midi track.
For example, all the keyboard on Dream Theaters stuff is recorded in midi then tweaked before being added to the album, even the piano; he took a mic'd grand and a midi controller, recorded the part on each and added sounds from the soft synth 'Ivory' to the midi track, played them side by side and the entire band aggreed that the midi recording was by far superior.

not only sound, but light automation as well.

aye that was nice. i'm not a big fan of the crunchy tone when it comes to fretlesses, but that was still awesome nonetheless. good find.
