OK so i went to order a b-52 60w 1x12 tube amp today from guitar center and apprently when the guy was calling around since he didnt have one in stock, all he could find were broken ones. he called me back to say we should think of another option because obviously after calling 6 different places and finding 6 broken ones, he wasnt too impressed lol. so he said he would hold the order and we should talk about options on monday.

soooo since the randall i ordered was not up to snuff and the b-52 apprently has quality issues, i am re-opneing my look for an amp.

i want an amp that has a lot of diversity to it. i play anything from metallica to 3 doors down and calssic rock. so i want an amp that has decent cleans but more important, a real nice overdrive or distortion setting. My budget is 500-700 and i can go new or used. (id rather go new as i dont like taking risks on used equipment). so please throw me some ideas...thanks.

i hear a lot of good things about traynors, but 40w is still a lot of juice

for the randall, it ahd a ton of vibration inside at certain frequencies. it was very very apparent when you would hit the note taht would set if of. amde is sound like the thing was falling apart.

B-52s are terrible man, the other guitarist in my band has had only problems with his...

buy a peavey xxx, they'll run you about 500-700 new if you can find one that price or used

30w Laney! Loud as hell, and you get sweet distortion from them.

an ac30 won't do it for metal. it could handle classic rock but not much more then that. you might want to try a peavey xxx. or if your willing to spend a bit less the peavey valveking is pretty good too.

It could though.

It'd naturally get the classic sounds he's after, stick an MI Audio CB before it for that 80's Metallica metal sound and I have no idea about the other band.

so far the traynor is looking best. all the other ones that have been named are 800+ unless i go used.

EDIT: does the 2 spealer set up still allow for low valume playing? because there is another traynor that just has the 1x12 instead of 2x10 and is a bit cheaper.

no tube amp really allows for low volume playing without an attenuator.

lilcurtis
03-31-2007, 06:48 PM
true but i mean, will the speakers really change anything volume wise? ive heard its always better to get the 2 speakers vs the one yes?

bullshit, youre an idiot

mnemonic
03-31-2007, 06:53 PM
speakers do affect the volume alot, yes.

the more efficient the speakers, the louder it will be.

on the other hand, inefficient speakers wont be as loud, and crappy speakers will sound bad, and my have cone breakup.

also, there isn't really much of a difference between 1 or 2 speakers.

lilcurtis
03-31-2007, 07:23 PM
ahh, i just heard most people say that 2 speakers give you a more full tone due to them being stereo vs mono.

so then since i am doing the home type thing im guessing the one speaker might be the route to go?

this is the one speakers version of the other traynor i posted. its $40 cheaper.

well it depends really. alot of cabs (most) will be in mono anyways.

stereo ones are cool becasue you can run stereo effects and stuff tho.

not sure about hte fullness thing tho

nice amp man. run in od in front of it and it gets heavy as hell.

idk how much you want to spend though. maybe you want to wait for those new bugera/behringer amps. idk.

yes that's true he could do that. but then he'd have to go out and buy more stuff. also ac30s, especially the vintage ones, are fairly expensive.

from what i've read the traynors will get you a good classic rock tone but probably won't put you into the metal category. pretty much all the amps recomended so far will get you a hard rock tone, not metal. keep in mind that if you get any of the amps recomended so far you'll have to put an overdrive, distortoin or other type of pedal in front of it.

lilcurtis
03-31-2007, 09:37 PM
well i heard sound bites from the traynor and it sounded pretty good. when i say metal im not talking like slayer style or anything really really harsh. like i said, metallica sound.

Bad experience??? Evilbay is the bomb!

I can't remember what music you play but considering you went Randall, I don't think the Traynor will cut it for you on the distortion channel, *did you hear the sound samples*? *^^^ beaten

Yar, I think it's stupid to not have seperate EQs, but I personally wouldnt find it that much of an issue...

03-31-2007, 10:38 PM
i just cant believe that there doesnt seem to be a nice metal tube amp in my price range. the XXX looks ok but thats $100 over what i would really like to spend. granted what more is $100 but considering i was originaly at $600 as my max, i have already been playing that game lol.

lilcurtis
03-31-2007, 10:53 PM
my issue when it comes to the musical realm with ebay is, if there is an issue with the amp...too bad...your screwed.

EDIT: ok so i decided the traynor isnt gonna get me there after listening to some music. basically if i can hit "Sad but True" Metallica tone and then a nice clean as well, ill be satisfied.
