I'm a few listens in myself. It's better than Sad Songs and not as good as Alligator. They bring the rock much less but the songs are fantastic.

"Gospel" ranks up there with their best.

I'd say it's a very worthy and successful followup to Alligator, but that's just superfandom speaking.

I am also superfandom but the progression from Sad Songs -> Alligator -> Boxer almost feels like regression in the way they approach songwriting. Sad Songs sounded great but kind of weary, Alligator was more raw and excited, and songs like "Brainy" feel like blueprints for something that should be more developed. Not in that I want full orchestras and other **** of Sufjanesque proportions for this band, but the songs are just missing some essential ingredient that would bring them to the level of my previously mentioned favorites. Maybe they sound too bored.

I've been listening to this for the last couple of days and I must say, it grows on you. Okay, okay, it's hard to follow up Alligator as it might just be my favorite album of the last 5 years but this is by no means a mediocre album.
Tracks like Mistaken for Strangers, Green Gloves, Start a War and Gospel are seriously top notch and definitly Alligator worthy

Yeah, Boxer is great. It's brilliance is a little more subdued, and I'm glad to see they leaned this way as opposed to getting larger and trying to recreate Alligator's swirling anthems.

Worthy successor for sure.

I quite like it from the first listen. Nothing really stands out though but then Alligator didn't grab me straight away.

I like this album now. I wrote a big thing about why I like it, but I can't be ****ed to post it because A/I now sucks with the exception of like four people.
