View Full Version : Hearing the Bass

I’m new to playing the bass and ever since I’ve started I’ve been trying to listen to other bass players and it seems that while some parts are clear, they’re always way overpowered by drums and guitar. Sure, some artists like Primus, Nuclear Rabbit, some others you can hear but for the most part you can’t.
So my question would be; is there a program that you can load your CD into that takes away everything but the bass, or at least brings it out clearer?

Because of the way human ears work, higher frequencies are picked up better than lower frequencies. You can learn to hear the bass more clearly by consciously focusing on the bass, you can learn to concentrate on certain frequencies and pick out what people are playing it just takes time to get the right ear for it.
But for extra help you just need your computer and windows media player.
Go into the view menu, go into enhancements, select graphic equaliser and increase some of the sliders to the left while lowering the ones on the right. That will increase the bass frequencies and lower the higher ones.

In most rock music, the bass is felt as a presence.
Your ear will become better at detecting the tones as you continue playing.

You could always rip the songs off of CD's and then use a wave editor (I use the one found in Adobe Audition 2.0 on a regular basis) and re-EQ the wave form to be more bass friendly and cut out a lot of the mids and highs. The issue with this is that you're going to get tons of kick drum and the lower toms in addition to bass. Probably the bottom end of the guitar, and any baritone/bass vocals.

The longer you've been playing bass, the better you can hear it in songs.

Use the EQ like they said. Or you could get Winamp and Izotope Ozone plugin and use one of the high-bass settings.
And just learn to listen for it.
And you can turn up the bass EQ, listen for a bit and then turn it off and you'll realize what you're missing.

Decent headphones help, not like in-ear ones, but big bin-lid ones, you can hear the bass more as all the sound has like much more clarity, as opposed to listening through normal stereo speakers or in-ear headphones.

if you use windows media player than turn the SRS WOW effects on.
turn down the wow effect to like barely anything. maybe 10-15.
turn the tru bass up to 85 or higher.
than rock out as prescribed.

Thanks everyone. A lot of these things helped, especially turning the SRS WoW on.

There are quite a few legitimate players who use picks. It's just that they are overshadowed by pop-punk players and their straight 8th/16th's...

If it's almost non present in the mix, a little EQ might help, but there isnt much you can do.
For bass to cut through, you need to use a lot of midrange.

When listening to audio recordings, set your EQ to the classical setting, duh.

This is true. Once you get used to picking it out and listening, you'll probably find that it's all you can focus on in a song sometimes.

Seriously, "ur a girl who wears girlpants."
I didn't realise it was wrong for one to wear the type of trousers specific to their gender.
