I searched and I couldn't find a Death thread so I decided to make one. Sure there is a death metal thread, but I think the band needs their own thread.

so let's discuss anything relating to the band.

There have been a few, and I know there was at least one long going one, but the search function is being lame.

I quite enjoy Death.

FatalEnergy
03-28-2007, 12:27 AM
Yeah, it had the Scream Bloody Gore title.

I listened to that the other day actually.

aw man, I thought I was being like all original and stuff

PinkFreud

I like them. I prefer their newer, more techy stuff though. Individual Thought Patterns. DiGiorgio and Hoglan are nigh unbeatable.

what's this I hear about early death being better than they're later albums like symbolic? what's the difference?

Apocalyptic Raids
03-28-2007, 02:39 AM
The old albums aren't as technical, and they're more along the lines of Morbid Angel, Obituary etc

I think the older albums are far superior, but for every person who prefers early Death there will be someone who likes later Death more.

StreetlightRock
03-28-2007, 02:40 AM
Im with Pink on this, their later, technical stuff is so much better IMO- Human, being my favorite. Scream Bloody Gore and stuff just don't do it for me.

They pretty much got more "progressive" with each album.

Gotta love their later works more :) But their old stuff is still great.

Individual Thought Patterns and Human are killer. Spiritual Healing is my least favourite album by them.

Great band.

EDIT: Symbolic as well

CrossTheBreeze

so is their early stuff more "raw" or something? like do they use more headbanging riffs and more palm muteing?

jva
03-28-2007, 03:21 AM
What about The Sound of Perseverance? It's got Spirit Crusher on it. Which I think is one of their best songs. And the cover of Painkiller is just awsome!

CrossTheBreeze

Than you have one of their best albums or at least there most progressive/technical one in your possession. And the Priest cover is worth it!

Apocalyptic Raids
03-28-2007, 03:28 AM
That cover of Painkiller is horrible. So is the rest of the album, really.

yes you could say that. It's alot simpler.

that thing about me being a girl was all just a joke dude.

perhaps I should purchase their early albums first then, because like metal that makes you want to jump up and down like a maniac

03-28-2007, 04:43 AM
I like Sounds of Perseverance a lot because of all the guitar soloing. Chuck is really at his best at guitar playing on this album. I also like the way he sings more on this album than earlier ones. That is what makes Death unique to me
If I want to hear pure Death Metal I listen to the bands Apocalyptic Raids named and Cannibal Corpse of course :p

I like the mid and late eras the most, but Leprosy is in my maybe top 3 Death albums.

Stoo
03-28-2007, 10:41 AM
Leprosy is so awesome. I like both eras equally... At times I feel the Tech stuff is being technical for the hell of it... (kind of like most Tech Death Metal) Still outstanding though.

Sacred Serenity is probably my favourite song. Followed by Leprosy \m/!

TSOP kinda annoys me... musically good, but his vocals? It's Chuck not fudging Alexi Laiho.

Death are good but are overrated. They just made (some) good death metal. NOthing more or less.

I've only heard 1 song off of Sound of Perserverance (voice of the soul) but from what I hear, I really like and I CAN hear a major difference between old and new stuff.

I love it when a band keeps getting better as the move unlike some other bands.....

Toaster
03-28-2007, 09:34 PM
They didn't really get better as much as they started to wank off a lot more. IMHO.

PinkFreud
03-28-2007, 09:36 PM
But Steve Digiorgio and Gene Hoglan are beasts. So it's ok for them to be techy on ITP.

Toaster
03-28-2007, 09:41 PM
They were beasts but the addition of their wankery made Death's music progressively more dull and sterile. Who can honestly say that those agonizing, gratuitous bass glisses belong on ITP? I just think the band became more of a device for the members to show off.

PinkFreud
03-28-2007, 09:47 PM
I can say that. And I do!

Sorry. I guess I believe that showing off has a place in music.

Maybe. But then again later Death, Cynic, and Atheist are my favorite death metal bands.

Well this leads nicely into the "serving the song" argument. But I'll leave that one..

Personally I feel Death's music is not nearly musical or tuneful enough to tastefully handle the large amount of wankery that is dealt to it in its later years.

You should try playing Changing Weather from Dark Hall. The tapping, slapping, and fingerstyle is insane on it. He's seriously the best metal bassist I've heard.

But Dark Hall is his jazz fusion side project.

You can download their EP for free. It's got some mindblowing bass.

pate
03-30-2007, 08:18 AM
It was me. Some kid from a forum I used to visit goes to a high school in California. At a football game one night, he sees Steve walking by, so he approaches him. He had always seen that the school's grounds keeper was a Steve DiGiorgio, but thought there was no way it could really be him. It actually was, and they talked for a long time. Steve has to do that to pay his bills, which is a damn shame.

Steve gave the kid some memorabilia from various bands he's been in, and they met regularly and talked, during school hours, which is funny.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Teacher, I need to go talk with Mr. Metal Bass Guitar Legend"
