So, after hearing about this movie for ages, I finally decided to check it out.......
AMAZING!!!
One of the greatest yet most depressing films I've ever seen. I've never been so close to tears while watching a film.
Discuss this masterpiece of a movie.

This movie was incredible. Definitely one of, if not the, best movies i've seen.

It's not overrated, it's very deserving of all the credit it receives. I suggest checking it out :)
But yeah, parts of it were kinda depressing. The part where they catch the two kids from the little kid gang was sad.

We're watching it in my African film class this semester. I only thought of this because you mentioned the subtitles, and every one of the movies we've watched so far (except for one) has had subtitles.
is it as good as wild hogs or hot fuzz

It's really not in the same genre as far as I'm concerned..(I've yet to see ESOTSM), but yes City of God is amazing. It's well worth watching more than once.

Bit wierd considering its set in Brazil.
Top film though. Pretty brutal in parts but it adds to the realism.
Anyone who has spent time in Brazil will understand why.

City of God is one of my favorite films. Shi, Theirs another film similiar to it that i think you guys would enjoy(many of the same actors)...its based around a true story in a Brazilian prison...forgot the name though.
My favorite movie! (haha check the av, been there awhile)
Anyone know of others like it that are good?

its very deserving of its credit
its a VERY powerful movie imho, the fact it was filmed in the vicinity (not the actual city of god, too dangerous) and most of the extras were locals trained up (the real knockout neds mother is one of the cast) is a really positive bit of casting.
i wouldnt call it a 'thug' movie, i think its a bit too deep for that. id certainly recommend it to anyone, especially fans of foreign cinema

lol, Lil Ze was one sexually frustrated mofo. That was why I liked Benny; he was sort of the antithesis of Lil Ze. All the girls flocked to him, whereas Lil Ze had to resort to raping them, cos he was an ugly bastard.

Another movie similar to it is Pixote. The story rotates around Brazilian juveniles in a jail, and then they live in the real world for a while. It's pretty cool too, but it has more gay buttsex than City of God (none), and I like COG's cinematography a lot better.

HAHA. Yeah that's nuts.
There is some nudity in the movie, like when the kids are showering in jail, getting assraped, etc. It's a little more disturbed than CoG, but whatev.
(I still like CoG better though).

Because it's depressing as hell, and not just because of the story but for the fact that stuff like that goes on daily in places like that.

I've actually never cried in a movie before.
