So Rounder won the last competition and the theme suggestion was
I want to hear the life story of the musician. In fact I would prefer an instrumental interpretation of your life story
Well the Life Story bit was done a few months back so I've emailed him a few times asking for other ideas and he hasn't responded so I'm going to let you guys pick. The new comp will start on April 1 so I'll leave the voting open till then...
History. American, World, military, anything.

Metalcore, please.
I thought genre themes were frowned upon?

metalllcore!

It's so much easier to compare apples to apples. If I make an electronica song that represents my life story and you make a death metal song, it's difficult for me anyway to compare them in a competition... I just picked genres that hadn't been done, at least any time since I've been on MX...

Why is it all metal?
How about electronic, acoustic, hip-hop? There's other genres of music to do.

Lee, here's our chance to write that doom song

How vague would an ethnic theme be?
I think that'd be a great idea.

I suppose it is atleast better than 1/2 of the other options.

You mean like do an African tribal drum circle?
Dude, that'd be badass.
Why is it all metal?

I suppose because it was traditionally the Metal Songwriting comp when it started, and it is in R&M.
Also, it's run by MetalOz, though I admit New-World-Ambient-ElectronicaOz would be a cool guy too. :p
Lee, here's our chance to write that doom song
I thought we were making a full album...
Anyhow, I'm for dooooooooooooooooooooooom.
The saddest song you can write. Or the happiest, whatever.

I think the theme should be:
EPIC METAL
Leave it vague like that and see what people come up with. There's many possibilities.
Or...
ONE CHORD PROGRESSION SONG
I think this could be interesting - seeing how much people can do with just one chord progression. It would be very challenging.

I like this too.

Anything having to do with death metal, black metal, or maybe acoustic...
I fear if we do a metalcore competition my song may come out more death metal than metalcore and I'll get booted, so I dunno.

We had a lifestory theme late last year, I wouldn't want that as a theme again just because it's next to impossible to write for it without lyrics, and a lot of people either can't sing or have no way of recording vocals.

Dude, that'd be badass.
Or just a song with any sort of ethnic influence or something.
I think that'd be tight.
It wouldn't be too hard, I mean you metal guys could just play a minor scale with an augmented seventh and call it exotic and stuff.

DOOM over the world.

Hmmm...I've been itching to write more doom.
Either that, or we could do metalcore. Then I could submit my Christian metalcore stuff I write when I'm extremely bored about how Jesus doesn't want you to have sex with men.
But yeah, doom is good.
Apocalypticon
03-28-2007, 07:11 PM
I still think we should do neofolk, but I would be up for doom. I'll definitely try and get something done for this though.
Invicta_Veritas
03-28-2007, 08:14 PM
Okay people, but if we do doom metal, my submission isn't going to be exactly doomy.....the closest I can get is really slow, sludgy melodeath, like a cross between Vehemence and Opeth and Candlemass.
Sound ok?
You can't just try to write doom?
Invicta_Veritas
03-28-2007, 08:19 PM
It's not what I do. When I write for these comps, I see if I can do something that would fit with my band or solo project. I don't have the time to be running around writing other things that are completely outside of what I do.
That, and I haven't heard/listened to a whole lot of doom, and it's not really my thing anyways.
Fair enough, but how do you know it's not your thing if you haven't heard much?
Shattered_Future
03-28-2007, 08:36 PM
I can't write anything but doom.
I love doom.
Hardhat
03-28-2007, 08:36 PM
Doom is the easiest thing to write for me....Either that or Black Metal.
I tried to write something happy for my brother a few days ago, and I couldn't do it. Not that I didn't want to, but everything kept coming out sad. Doom is taking over.
Doom is tied for my favorite genre.
Let's not restrict it to genres.
Invicta_Veritas
03-28-2007, 09:12 PM
Fair enough, but how do you know it's not your thing if you haven't heard much?
Because my thing is death and black metal, and various variations of the two.
And most doom vocals that I have heard (most notably, Candlemass) are annoying as hell.
Point mainly being, I don't need to be going off and exploring new horizons right now, you know what I mean? Now's not the time to redefine my musical tastes when it comes to writing.

Doom vocals stretch throughout alot of different styles so I don't think that will actually be a limiting factor for you.

I agree with this. I'm still finding my own style, so how the hell can I redefine what I haven't quite got yet?

Unless people come out of the woodwork voting for something else, it's looking pretty much like doom

K then question.......November's Doom doesn't really strike me as Doom Metal, but it's like a darker, doomier melodeath......would material like that suffice if we do a doom metal comp?
I call them death/doom, so I'd say so.
And then just do what?
Either themes or just free to write whatever anyone pleases.

Then I'm in. I've been wanting to write a slower, sludgier, darker song here recently...

That's totally an awesome theme. I vote this.
It'd be a shame if we have 4 competitions a year and one of them is wasted on ****ing doom metal.

Absolutely. Based on what you listen to, you'll love it.
Kage, you're just jealous because you and doom would be a disaster. :p
Why don't we do a King Crimson theme then
Dr. Jake Destructo

King Crimson cover competition.
What whaaaat.
No one here is worthy of covering the Crim.
Acoustic theme, just to spite metal.
(not to say that metal can't be played acoustically)

This is way off topic.
But I know you'll see it in here.
But when the Animal Cruelty album is finished, do you think you could review it?
I figure that could get my band a bit of exposure, and seeing how alot of people here are openminded, maybe a few fans too. And I've seen some of your reviews, and you're pretty good, so yeah.
I'm expecting to be finished with it by June.
I'm halfway done with it.

Bloody hell, you weren't joking. This is absolutely stunning. Definitely up my alley.
However, it's a little less doomy than, say, Pale Haunt Departure.
If we do doom, I'm in, but it will be very very deathy doom, like ND. I'll have to write a slow sludgy song with some acoustic parts or something. It'll be fun.

I'm not trying to be awkward but I really don't see how this is going to work. The definition of doom that you are using is a)crap and b)far too wide. You could have songs sounding like The Obsessed on one hand and songs like Sunn O)) or disembowelment on the other.
I'm interested to hear if anyone comes up with some proper doom.
In past competitions there were metal songs against acoustic songs against electronica songs, so the variety isn't an issue.
I'm already in a doom band, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do some 'proper doom'

Ok then. I've not noticed the other competitions but I'll look forward to hearing the results of this one.
