View Full Version : Cool tune I'm working on

This is a prog rock/metal tune that I've been working on. Alot of Tool and Cynic influence as well as a fair bit of John Mclaughlin. It's tentatively named "tribal" simply because of the tribal sounding tom/percussion parts in the beginning and interlude, but I'll probably come around to finding a better name eventually. Most of it is based around C# Locrian, so it has a rather unique/dark sound to it. Oh, and it's all in 7 too. :p

Let me know what you guys think. I'm still working on touching it up and adding some stuff, but it's sounding pretty decent. This is just an export of the guitar pro playback, as I haven't quite gotten the hang of using VSTs with rock instruments, but I play on eventually applying Drumkit from Hell and other stuff to give it a more realistic sound, and, of course, eventually I'll want to record live instruments. Here's what I have so far:

That was quite the composition, nice work. Hope to hear it with real instruments soon.

Yeah, I'm working on it...thanks!

BB: Other than the fact that it's in MIDI, what didn't you like about it?

I think I'd really dig it if the quality was more realistic. I like it a lot though. Why don't you have a band?? Sounds great man, keep it up!

Well, I don't have a band at the moment b/c I'm too busy with school/work/etc. It'd also be rather difficult to find anybody who could play alot of this stuff, hehe.

Cams gonna bitch you out for calling it tribal :(

I like it, I'm glad you're posting a bit more again, nice to have another knowledgeable member.

I kinda like it. I am sure I would like it more with real instruments.

You need more dynamic action, there isn't a lot of noticeable dynamic variation in it.

I couldnt tell if those were flams in it or just latency, but if they were flams I don't think they worked very well.

Yeah...there's a bit of variance and a crescendo or two, but it's tough to pull off dynamics with MIDI, not to mention in a rock/metal song. :p

Yeah, guitarpro doesn't seem to understand flams very well.

Oh well. :p As stated, it's a tentative title.

Thanks!

Haha thanks. Most of this stuff came about from just sorta jamming on different grooves and whatnot, so it wouldn't be too much of a feat from a technical perspective...sitting down and actually playing everything note for note would be a challenge though, admittedly. I foresee mixing/recording to be much more of a bigger hassle than performance, though.

Apparently my mac has a conflict with Putfile...

And when I downloaded it, I was pwn'd. I'm sure it sounded good the way you described it.

Pretty nice sounding.

IMO it could do with a low end tom roll at the end of a couple of bars for a bit of variation. But other than that and the midi-ness can't complain ;)

Yeah, I'm working on variety with the fills in general. Some of them are simply repeated (cut+paste), mostly because I wanted to get through the piece and get all of the ideas out before going back and adding details.
