View Full Version : More ***-kicking female-fronted metal. In This Moment

I don't know how many of you have even heard of this band, but they amaze me in a few ways.

I watched this band on MySpace go from simply being a 'local band' that was pretty good...to being a part of the Century Media family and having their debut album released through them and sold in stores as of this past Tuesday.

So who are they?

In This Moment is a 5 piece band out of California. Nothing special there, right? Well, it's the way they blend rock and metal so seamlessly that makes me like them so much.

Out of all the female-fronted hard rock/metal bands that I know of, In This Moment have enough heaviness to make one want to break something or someone...but have enough of that 'commercial rock sound' to be really, really accessible as well. Add to the fact that frontwoman Maria Brink's singing voice is really very good, very warm and inviting as it were, and you have the makings of a band that will be around for years to come.

She does plenty of screaming too, but honestly I'll admit that I think the screaming is probably her weak point. There are some times when it seems to work pretty well, but there are other moments when she seems like she is really straining to scream. It's a bit of an acquired taste, no doubt.

Musically, the rest of the band...is not necessarily doing anything that hasn't been done before. B tuned guitars, heavy riffing, the occasional solo, harmonized guitar licks. Just because it's not 'new' doesn't mean it's not cool or good to listen to, as they have some pretty decent riffs going on. Their clean material is pretty good too, often giving a very spacey feel to things which is great. Bass playing, subpar I think because as usual, it's the 'standard' of 'let's follow the guitar an octave lower all the time'. Drumming is pretty solid, but again nothing that really stood out to me.

I hope this is the first thread about this band on these boards, because it'll be the first time in a long time I've introduced someone to a band that is truly new to them.

Go check them out. And keep your bullsh*t out of here, I don't want any of it. Just want to share what I think is a pretty kickass band with ya'll.

EDIT: Oh come on lighten up with the censors would ya?

I've never really found many women fronted Metal bands that I like.

There's some chick on myspace, in a French Death/Black Metal band, and I sweat her voice (screaming/yelling/etc.) sounds just like some tough guy. If you didn't know she was a woman, you would think it's some guy.

But yeah, in general I find women voices better suited for Operas, or maybe soft rock or something, not metal.

This band added me on myspace forever and a day ago, I never really got too into them, but they did strike me as interesting.

I mostly ignore female fronted bands. Not because I dont like chicks in metal bands, but because they usually suck pretty bad. Except Arch Enemy. They are cool.

Check out Decadence. The girl in that has a great harsh voice. They're a swedish melo-death band and you should be able to google their myspace.

And to this I say if you haven't checked this band out, you should do that.

It's one thing if you say "Oh I've seen all these bands and can't stand them" but yeah. Seriously. Give these guys and gal a chance would ya?

I'm surprised at how many of you are against it really. I mean, I'm not saying that female in a metal band = great band automatically, but I mean...still.

Meh I was hoping this thread would've been a little more active but it's not really :(

I like female fronted bands, I see nothing wrong with female vocals in metal as long as it sounds good.

But onto the band : I listened to both of the songs and to me it just sounds like Killswitch Engage with a female vocalist, nothing to original IMO and doesn't help them to score points in their favor. And the vocalist her self is not that great IMO, she should really work on trying to get her scream sounding better or make it more gutteral and try to work on not singing to fast with her cleans as it almost sounds like a jumbled mess when she does.

Just my two cents.

And by the way, long time no see so good to see you are still alive. How is your band going?

uneXpect certainly doesn't suck. But the vocals are kind of shared so they aren't really "female-fronted". =/

I like Stream of Passion. Unexpect is cool, but apart from that I'm not a huge fan of female-fronted bands. I like it when bands use female singers in some of their songs, but when bands vocals are entirely female then it's a turn-off.

It depends what kind of metal you're talking about, Death Metal/Black Metal and all that does not go with female vox (except Arch Enemy), but with gothic metal and symphonic then female vox are great.

Check out Akoma for proof.

Ella Fitzgerald was pretty metal in her day. She had her legs amputated, that's mad street cred in the Death Metal realm.
