seeing as how theres no thread on this great band just thought i'd start one.

so to start of, what does everyone think about them?

Liked them a few years ago, then started strongly disliking them, then slipped into indifference, and today I got a strange urge to listen to them.

I can't stand them.

I don't like the guitarist singing. Why? He can't sing.

Toxicity was the only album worth a crap. Everything prior was horrid, everything afterwards was unjustifyingly insulting to music.

I think they let their political objectives overrule their music.

Invicta_Veritas
03-23-2007, 10:21 PM
That could be the case, if there was any music to be overruled. It's crap noise in my opinion.

Their S/T is the only good album they ever released tbh

aw come on, i think the music is great, in its minimalistic charm. and they arent that political........ only a few songs each album.

While I don't hate them or anything, I do think SOAD are pretty overrated. So many people I know love them and think they're so amazing but I really can't get into them.

I agree that they are overrated. But they make fun music. It is to political though.

Serj's vocals annoy the hell out of me. I used to like a few of their songs but they're kinda boring.

I like the S/t and a bit of Toxicity, the rest is meh.

btw, SOTD aren't an Armenian metal band.

Cocaine
03-24-2007, 12:00 AM
Yeah, they really arent. Only one of their current members was actually born in Armenia. Serj is from Lebanon, as is John, and Daron was born in the US (though he is Armenian by descent).

antihippy
03-24-2007, 12:00 AM
i mean that most of them are of armenian origin. and that the put armenian melodies in their brand of metal.

why's all the hate around? they are a pretty good band.

Cocaine
03-24-2007, 12:11 AM
Most of them aren't Armenian, and I dont exactly know what an "Armenian Melody" is.

i am the robots
03-24-2007, 12:13 AM
Well, if they're of Armenian descent, and they care about issues effecting their people (genetically) more power to them. It's not like they're posers or anything, they have the geneology, what's wrong with keeping in touch with your roots?

this is a rare band in that i don't know how i feel about them

i have listened to them extensively over time, some it it just plain rocks and the rest i am indifferent to. I like Serj's voice though it is an acquired taste, reminds me of Mike Patton singing in King For A Day era FNM (Digging The Grave in particular).

what i find most refreshing is that they are a nu-metal band that is not dwelling in pure misery and hate, they have a sense of humour and passion for what they believe in and i respect that. That said i don't listen to them much recently.

They, rather than dwelling on cliché topics like misery and hate, have gone and touched the rarely explored world of first year political science.

I don't see them as a political band, some of their songs are too nonsensical to pigeonhole them as such which a lot of people seem to do. The political aspect isn't unique or refreshing, thats not quite what i meant. I found them a breath of fresh air compared to other nu metal around the time Toxicity came out.

I really like Mezmerize/Hypnotize and don't find myself listening to there other stuff anymore. When I hear it like in my buddy's car or something it's cool, but otherwise I choose the new albums.

what he said.

and i don't think soad do cliche political stuff to sell. they do it because they believe in them! plus they make people think about the issues that's happening around the world.

I think their actions outside of their musical careers kinda prove they aren't political for the sake of being political (much like Green Day was perceived to be with the release of American Idiot)

i used to like them... their first two albums, till the release of "steal this album", were great! back then i was into rock and SOAD where one of the bands which opened the gates for metal for me.
i haven't listend to them for 3yrs now and meanwhile i'm into death-metal. some weeks ago i listend to them again and it was horrible. after knowing what "real" (lol) metal is, i just don't understand why i liked them.

^^ i just don't really get that kind of metal head mindsets. i listen to cyptopsy and opeth TONS, plus many weird and hilariously ****ed up bands, yet i can still dig into system of a down.

SOAD are a band I've always enjoyed, but never loved.

Mesmerize is a fab album but I can't stand most of Hypnotize. Their other three all have some great songs and some truly awful songs.

So why don't people like nu-metal? i have never really understood the real reason why people are quick to bag this genre.

Is it the simpleness of the music? The subjects/themes dealt with in their songs? the 13 year old fans (who seem to never grow up, or maybe nu-metal only applies to 13 year olds)?

Are SOTD nu-metal? I thought nu-metal was generally rapping over metal riffs.

Grumma
03-25-2007, 02:54 AM
Dunno . ..

I a) don't mind some nu-metal and b) don't think SOAD are nu-metal anyway

You're thinking of Rage Against The Machine, and they're awesome.

SOAD, on the other hand, not so much.

Not quite. I was thinking Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, etc... ROTM seem to be an exception. I guess the music itself is different. ROTM is more old school bluesy riffs, while nunumetal is more noise type riffs.

Grumma
03-25-2007, 04:47 AM
Yeah I would use KoRn as more of a typical nu-metal band then Rage Against the Machine

antihippy

i wouldn'treally put soad in nu metal.

they only rap in one song, and that's a cover of "shame" which they did with the wu tang clan.

I assume you mean 'RATM'. Rage are definately not nu metal. I still dont really agree with saying Slipknot are nu-metal.

Ah yes, my mistake (unless there are bands with that acronym).

Yeh, back in the day, I didn't think Slipknot were nu-metal as well. Their music is a bizarre mix of various sounds. I think they're light-heavy metal, as opposed to heavy, heavy metal. Actually, I have no idea.

SoaD used to be my favorite band. I was in love with all three of their early albums, but I was severely dissapointed with Mezmerize and Hypnotize. I rarely listen to any of their stuff any more, but they're a solid band nonetheless.

PepsiMetal
03-25-2007, 01:12 PM
Yea same. Their earlier albums up to Toxicity, and even Steal this Album were pretty good. The double CD, as always, sucks major ***. Plus Daron singing is an insult to my ears. I read on wikipedia that Serj is working a solo album, that should be interesting.

But yea like Jake, I rarely listen to their stuff anymore. Not sure why to be honest, but just don't.
