Free jazz while stoned is unbelieveable. Stuff actually makes sense then.
Coma Divine by Porcupine Tree might as well be the stoner theme album.

I was in jazz history class, and the lesson was on Coltrane. I had listened to A Love Supreme before, but I'd never actually immersed myself in it. After that day, the album has been one of my favorite jazz albums, haha.
I know it's not the free-est example, but it was the episode that I remember the most.
I'd listen to Astronome while stoned...that would be scary/awesome.

I used to get high and listen to music. But after smoking everyday for almost 2 years straight has made the combination not that amazing anymore.

i got stoned and listened to slayer one night while i was staying somewhere with nothing to do. it was like a bolt of grey electric lightning running through my head and i was terrified. I listened to Faith No More as well, (at that time i was a massive fan) and couldn't believe how insane it was.
Prodigy's first album brought images that were alarmingly similar to mid 90s windows screensavers into my head. It sounds so blippy and digital. Then i listened to Fat of The Land and the difference in imagery was amazing.
I don't get stoned as a general rule that i freak out and get paranoid about reality unless i have music to listen to.

I really need to get my hands on some and just have a total chilled out day sometime with a lil Boards of Canada and Ozric Tentacles.
Oh and i've just gotten back into Nick Drake, man that guy can paint pictures in my mind. River man just transports me somewhere else :p.
When I go to my friends house to get high and go into town they insist on playing **** like Enter Shikari and Atreyu..whats the point.

Anything long and repetative with harsh vocals usually isn't good stoned. Opeth, Empyrium, Agalloch, Burzum, Primordial etc. for example.
Dr. Jake Destructo
03-23-2007, 07:45 PM
Minimalist bands like Agalloch are no fun high because the beauty lies in discovering new things within the music. Not to say bands like that aren't good, but they're just not good stoner music.

When I listen to Agalloch high, it isn't to discover new things, it is to experience a certain emotion and to be carried away in the music. I put on the Mantle because it takes me on a musical journey where I can envision something which I enjoy, cheesy as it may sound : ).

You guys don't know what you're talking about, metal is perfect when you're high.
Gothenburg style stuff specifically,
In Flames - Jester Race
At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul
Dark Tranquillity - Character
Light This City - Facing The Thousand
Through The Eyes Of The Dead - Scars Of Ages
Darkest Hour - Undoing Ruin
All amazing stoned.
Also,
Between The Buried And Me - any of their albums
Opeth - any of their albums
Envy - any of their albums
Orchid - any of their albums
Amanda Woodward - any of their albums
Yep.

Sometimes black metal freaks me out when I'm stoned. I listened to The Work Which Transforms God once very late, in the dark, as I was stoned. I got scared.
It's either that, or I just can't take it seriously at all.
i am the robots
03-24-2007, 11:10 AM
Yeah, that's how black metal normally is. Blut Aus Nord does a very good job at creating an eerie atmosphere (my favorite BM band)... then there's Mayhem and the likes.

Ha, one time some friends and I smoked in a forest and I had brought the Mantle along to listen to for the first time. We were walking back to the car and I fell back and listened to all of In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion for the first time. It was awesome. My friends were all really surprised that after 15 minutes of listening I'd only gotten through one song.
But I'll usually throw on some Al Di Meola or Billy Cobham or something.

Yeah, I love them when I'm sober, but sometimes it's just a little too much in an altered state. My non-metal friends have described that album as sounding like hell or torture... I love it!

Listening to 99% of metal while stoned is absolutely retarded in my opinion, mainly stuff like black metal and folk metal.

That is wrong on so many levels ha. Metal stoned is awesome. But like I said on the previous page, black metal is very very hard to take seriously when high. Other than that though it's right up there with jazz fusion, flamenco, and psychedelic music for the best genres to listen to stoned.
I write some of my most emotional, epic, and best songs when I'm stoned. I'll be done with the album in a month or so to prove it.

I actually can understand growled lyrics better when I am stoned. I think it's because I totally immerse myself in the music and nothing else around me. That being said, bands I like when stoned:
-Gojira
-Lamb of God (their live DVD with 7.1 surround, Chris Adler's drums will blow your mind)
-The Faceless
