View Full Version : All Things Josh Homme (QOTSA, Kyuss etc.)

So since I've been on a complete Josh Homme kick I guess I should make this thread.
Josh Homme started his career as guitarist for legendary stoner rock band Kyuss and was unique in the fact that he used a bass amplifier to get a low sound. After Kyuss broke up he decided to make another band called Queens of the Stone Age in which he was singer, guitarist and main songwriter. Josh has been in loads of projects since including the very sexual Eagles of Death Metal and the experiment Desert Sessions where the only consistent member has been Josh himself.
I've been listening to a lot of Kyuss recently, Blues For The Red Sun is such a breath-taking album and almost sends me into a trance when I listen to it. I've also been listening to a lot of QOTSA but mainly Rated R and Lullabies To Paralyze.

Plus he is a complete bad ***.

Plus he is a complete bad ***.Haha, took the words out my mouth. I remember an article about him in a music magazine and there's a picture of him smoking a cigarette and giving the horns and I'm like, "**** yeah."
And he is one of my favourite guitarists too next to Thurston Moore and Greg Ginn (who extremely influenced Homme).

The solo on Demon Cleaner is so boss.

Totally. Most of his solos with Kyuss are usually bluesy but with QOTSA his solos are like Greg Ginn.
Oh and I just found an old Kerrang magazine I had which has Josh Homme saying his favourite albums. It was quite surprising.
1. Peaches - 'Father****er
"It's ****ed-up, it won't bullshit for one second."
2. Johnny Cash - 'At San Quentin'
"He really lived it."
3. Black Flag - 'The First Four Years'
"It's the best music to take inspiration from."
4. Primal Scream - 'Evil Heat'
"They're not interested in what else is going on"
5. Tom Waits - 'Bone Machine'
"Heavy is about delivery, not distortion"
6. Iggy & The Stooges - 'Raw Power'
"You touch this, you're gonna get shocked."
7. Misfits - 'Legacy of Brutality'
"Roy Orbison rockabilly over a layer of darkness"
8. Bjork - 'Post'
"A great genre-less work of art
9. Devo - 'Q: Are We Not Men? ...'
"A band that's not afraid of twisting ****"
10. Can - 'Tago Mago'
"A bizarre continuation of hippy traditions"

All those albums rule except for Bjork.
And Peaches.

I really didn't expect Peaches but it's definitely an original list.

I love his singing voice, like when he hits the falsetto in "No One Knows". Or any other song that has his falsetto.

Bjork is awesome.
But I love Kyuss and QOTSA, they're both awesome.
QOTSA is one of my favorite bands and Josh is the reason.

I love Kyuss, that band is awesome, Blues for the Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley are great albums to listen...stoned or not.
IMO Kyuss is way better than QotSA, but still I like QotSa, Song for the Deaf is a great album.

"If Only" has the most beautiful solo ever.

I like a lot of Josh's Kyuss solos since they are mostly melodic, a lot of his solos in QOTSA seem to be improv. in Greg Ginn style (I've probably already said that in the thread but mehh).
Best Queens record by far is Rated R, it rocks.

I think SftD is better than Rated R, but that's just my thought.
So, Era Vulgaris coming up, what's everyone's expectations?

eh, i never bothered to check out Eagles of Death Metal
are they any good?
Neoteric

Their charm kinda runs out fast.
And SftD would be a lot better if they cut out a few bad songs and cut out that annoying radio thing. It made it very inconsistent I felt.
And I can bet money that Era Vulgaris will sound like Lullabies To Paralyze.

Nick fascinates me. I wonder if QOTSA will pick up after LtP, and the very much missed influence of him.

They should get Scott Reeder.
The bassist from Dead from Above 1979 was a candidate, but then he had some problems or something like that.

I think I like Kyuss a little more than QOTSA but they are both great bands, everything thanks to Josh.

I agree 100%. It annoys me because there's pure gold on that record but you really have to put up with some **** to get to it. The radio thing pisses me off, and songs like Six Shooter and Gonna Leave You are so bad that I want to throw the disc out the window.

You shut the **** up too, because you haven't been here in a long time and if you had, you'd know that Eliminator is nothing but a ****ing troll.

I love Josh's vocals best when there's some vocal-less croon in the background and he's singing and stuff over heavy guitars. Pure bliss.

i cant believe, in an interview, he said Metallica stole his ideas on the stage and ideas for song writing, ****ing idiot
I'm a pretty big Kyuss fan and like QOTSA quite a bit. Welcome to Sky Valley and Rated R are my favorite albums by both bands.
Queens were great when I saw them live.
lol. So you'll hold an eternal grudge against him for something he likely said in jest? He's got a dry, sarcastic sense of humor in case you have trouble picking up on things like humor.

Kyuss are one of my favourite bands. I wake up to Catamaran every morning :D
I've listened to the first 2 Desert Sessions and nothing really stood out as being great for me. I'll give them another listen though see if they stick second time round.
What are your guys expectations for the new album?
