A brief history:

Possibly the first band to fuse minstrel music from the United Kingdom with rock and blues and progressive music, Jethro Tull has their place in rock history as one of the most innovative and musically advanced bands of the 60s, 70s, and probably of all time. Lead by Ian Anderson (flutist, acoustic guitar, vocals, and lyrics), the band rocketed to instant fame all over the world with their release of Aqualung in 1971 (the same time Led Zeppelin came out with IV and recorded in the same studio at the same time), a momentous year in the development of rock. The band continued to mold their own sound with the release of their seminal album, Thick as a Brick, and the follow-up, A Passion Play. Jethro Tull fans, although not running down the street shirtless with the band's name tatooed to their heads cursing and swearing with a bottle of whiskey, in their hand and poorly singing lyrics from their songs (except for that one time. Maaaaan we were loaded), are numerous and devoted.

Discuss the magic that is Jethro Tull in this thread.

I only have listened to Aqualung, but I love it. I think I'll check out Thick as a Brick next.

These guys are one of my favorite bands.

They're rock 'n roll, plain and simple.

No they're not plain and simple. Listen to A Passion Play and then tell me they're plain and simple.

I love hearing the flute in their music. I got turned on to them by randomly picking up Aqualung on vinyl for a dollar, and for some reason there were two copies of the disc in the sleeve. So now I have two, yay!

great great band, very distinct from any other band ever labeled prog or folk.

That's reason enough to love them. They're different than any other band but not weird for the purpose of weird (most of the time).

They're a completely different band then Metallica.

Think more along the lines of the Zep, Pink Floyd and Queen

They're quite enjoyable, and Aqualung holds a place in my heart.

A similar band is Galadriel from Australia, classic rock with a flute.

He was talking about the time when they just introduced the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal award in the grammy's and Jethro Tull won it. From then on they were seperate awards.

saw them live in 2003/2004 (can't remember which one)

i was in the 7th row, appox dead-center. Though Ian Anderson's voice isn't what it once was, the flute solos were still amazing.

I can't remember a single song I wanted them to play that they didn't play :D

Class band, my dad's a huge fan and has been playing them around the hosue for years now so it's kinda rubbed off on me.

Nothing To Say, Teacher, Locomotive Breath and For Michael Collins, Jeffrey And Me are all classic songs, such a strong groove going on.

Kurrpt

Locomotive Breath is great, but its one of the most overly-played songs on the radio, next to Aqualung, so i stay away from those tbh.

Check out Jump Start, To Cry You a Song, Mother Goose, Sossity; You're a Woman, My God, Songs From the Woods, With You There to Help Me, Bouree

yea, way too many to list

Aqualung man. Kickass album.

I'm personally partial to "Wond'ring Aloud" from that album.

When I went to New York with a bunch of friends, late one night, one of them put on a Passion Play as I was stoned. It was really cool and I'll probably end up picking it up soon. The narration was a bit odd though, ha.

Haha. A Passion Play is such a great stoning album. That Hare who lost his spectacles may creep you out, though.

Kurrpt: I think I've got just about every one that I'm interested in but I could send it to you out of the goodness of my heart. Email? Or if you have slsk that'd be easier.

I found a beat-up LP of Too Old To Rock N Roll, Too Young to Die at Goodwill, it's a pretty solid album. Taxi Grab is cool.

Yeah I figured.

Just pointing out that he shouldnt think they sound similar just cos they beat Metallica to the award :p

Stand up is better with the exception of the first 2 songs. Oh man. A New Day Yesterday is pretty bad.
