So I noticed there's no Funeral Doom thread and decided I must remedy this.

I guess we can start by listing the FD bands we like, and reccomendations of artists/albums to listen to.

FD Artists I listen to:

Ahab
Monolithe
Bunkur
Wormphlegm
Esoteric
Thergothon
Mournful Congregation
Pantheist
Shape Of Despair
Torture Wheel
Wraith Of The Ropes

Reccomendations:

Ahab - The Call Of The Wretched Sea
Esoteric - Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum
Wraith Of The Ropes - Ada
Shape Of Despair - Angels Of Distress
Monolithe - Monolithe I

I love FD.

Everyone needs to check out Grivf. I can't whore them enough. They are just beyond words. It's so intense and just overwhelming sounding.

Hmmm, Grivf are compared to Nortt, and I didn't enjoy Nortt much when I checked them out awhile ago.

FD deserves it's own thread imo, and by the way, Funeral Doom and Stoner/Doom are two different genres. Sure, there are similarities, but that's like trying to lump black and death metal together because they both use blastbeats and harsh vocals.

I cleary stated that the Stoner AND Doom thread cover a vast multitude of Doom sub-genres, and creating a whole other thread to discuss one of its sub-genres isn't needed. The original thread for this discussion works fine, even if it isn't specific to just Funeral Doom.

Like doom metal but much deeper and slower, and generally has growled vocals. Sometimes it has clean but they are generally really brooding sounding.

Well then we might as well not have a death metal thread, or a black metal thread, since we can discuss every subgenre of plain "metal" in a thread entitled "The Metal Thread".

I'd like to devote an actual thread to my favorite genre of Doom, and I fail to see what's wrong with that.

what exactly is funeral doom?

"Funeral doom

Funeral doom is a style that takes the slowness of doom metal to further extremes, and that puts a strong emphasis on an atmosphere of despair and emptiness. The style can be seen as a departure from death/doom, slowing down the music even further, and frequently incorporating influences from ambient music, creating a sound which is distorted and gloomy, but often dreamy at the same time. Vocals are usually growled, but are often much less in the foreground than in other styles of music, and are rather used to provide an additional texture to the music. The style was originally pioneered by Thergothon[citation needed], and later also by Skepticism and Funeral[citation needed]; modern examples include Monolithe, Mournful Congregation and Shape of Despair. Celestiial was recently credited with taking the genre to new places[citation needed]."

Wikipedia ftw.

I forgot to mention Funeral in my artist list, because I consider them more Gothic Doom than FD. But they are still awesome. Anyone else listen to them?

Stop being so uptight, Austin. Freezing Moon had a Traditional Doom thread ages ago and there weren't any complaints. I don't see the problem with this thread. The Stoner/Doom thread is the same 5 people dicussing 70% Stoner, 29% Funeral and 0.000001% Traditional anyway.

As for the topic, I really like Esoteric and Mournful Congregation. I much prefer Traditional Doom though.

I wouldn't be able to get into that then.

Luc214
03-19-2007, 02:44 AM
I don't get the problem with long songs. It's an adjustment, but it's really not much different than listening to a 50 minute album. It's not like it's a constant single riff stretched out for an hour, there are plenty of changes.

So far I think it's probably a 8/10. I guarantee it'll grow on me, though. It happens to me with all Doom.

I <3 the drums in that track also. The drums in the first 3 songs are perfect, I love the sound. Then they change the production after that awesome interlude, I wish they hadn't done that, the first 3 songs were perfect in terms of sound and production.

I need to listen to Fallen, I haven't heard them yet. Hmm, Funeral has a female singer, but they're more Gothic than Funeral doom.

Please explain the difference between Doom and Funeral Doom. I really only listen to Sahg and Isole, so I am not too familiar with Doom in the first place.

Luc214
04-16-2007, 02:36 PM
Funeral Doom is usually really, really slow and atmospheric and it's usually more simplistic than regular/traditional doom like Sahg or Isole.

It can have a sad or depressive atmosphere like Shape Of Despair or Pantheist, or it can go to the other extreme and have an atmosphere of sheer terror like Bunkur or Wormphlegm.

I reccomend Ahab if you want to give Funeral Doom a shot, their album The Call Of The Wretched Sea is surprisingly accesible for Funeral Doom. Esoteric - Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum is a good place to start as well.

Doom = Slow and Repetitive

Funeral Doom = More Slow and Repetitive

Poofy 666

From wiki:
Traditional doom

Traditional doom is a doom metal in it's purest form. It is mostly slow, riff-based "downer" metal which was influenced by Black Sabbath as well as the NWOBHM movement. Typical examples include Saint Vitus, Trouble, Pentagram and Candlemass). Four "waves" have so far been recognised in the history of traditional doom: the first one started with the originators of the entire genre, the proto-doom bands Black Sabbath and Pentagram; the second one has been located in the mid-1980s, especially in the work of Saint Vitus and Candlemass; the third one started with the success of Cathedral's debut album Forest of Equilibrium; and the fourth has recently been affiliated with Reverend Bizarre.

Funeral doom

Funeral doom is a style that takes the slowness of doom metal to further extremes, and that puts a strong emphasis on an atmosphere of despair and emptiness. The style can be seen as a departure from death/doom, slowing down the music even further, and frequently incorporating influences from ambient music, creating a sound which is distorted and gloomy, but often dreamy at the same time. Vocals are usually growled, but are often much less in the foreground than in other styles of music, and are rather used to provide an additional texture to the music. The style was originally pioneered by Thergothon, and later also by Skepticism and Funeral; modern examples include Monolithe, Mournful Congregation,Shape of Despair, and Rememberance.
