View Full Version : Top 100 Metal Bands
Well, what an interesting last round we had. Opeth, Death and Iron Maiden went through, with the usual bitching, flaming, arguing and complaining that accompanies every poll. So why has this last round bothered me so much? I dunno, I mean, only 5% is directed at me (the holder of the contest), yes I seem to be taking every petty insult on both sides of the argument personally, probably since I'm a big fan of almost all the bands in this round (a rare thing, apparently) and as such, the pissing contest this last round devolved into has made me reconsider my opinion of R&M as a whole.
We have a diverse crowd of chaps and ladies, from different backgrounds, of different ages, and with different tastes in music. This is a great thing, because not only do you have a good chance of finding someone who shares your love for genre X or band Y or riff Z, but you always have someone to spar with, to debate a little topic in a mature way. That's the appeal of the interweb, I feel. And most people enjoy a good argument, just like I do, but I've noticed that a lot of the fun that we had fighting with each other in the old days is gone.
I don't want to turn this into a "golden age" reminiscence, so I'll stick to the point at hand. We have older people, around 18, 19 and up, and the younger crowd of 14-17. Yet this latest round made me reconsider my opinion of you all, since it seemed like a fight between a bunch of 8 year olds over which power ranger could fly the Millenium Falcon the best. It was inane, repetitive, incessantly annoying and just plain immature.
Because of this, I'm not running the final. And I don't think I'll be approving any future polls or competitions similar to this in R&M in the future, though I certainly don't speak for Bart or Jelle.
Sorry.

yeah I was pretty over this comp when this last round started.
the only that really annoyed me was the people getting upset because their favourite smaller band was (predicatably) getting beaten by more popular bands. ugh.

Actually, Metallica remains as the best metal band in R&M since they won the last competition.
What a shame really, I thought this competition was more mature than last one.

New idea for series of polls
Even though I think it'll work out the same as any other poll (personal tastes), I'm thinking we judge one band at a time. Uh, every Sunday there is a football program (the World Game). They have a segment where they pick out a famous football player, discuss him and then get viewers to vote where category he fits into. Poll choices include such things like "Hall of Fame", "Master", "Genius" and then so on.

This is actually why I avoided posting in most of the voting threads. There wasn't any worthwhile conversation to be had.
there very rarely is any decent discussion in any of the voting threads. i remember in old R&M's top 100 bands / albums / songs etc, there was at least semi-decent discussion about the merits of different options on the polls, but now the stupid slagging off just goes too far.
i'm glad Jason's made this thread, it was about time something was done about it.

Well for one, who the **** would compare the atmosphere of JUDAS ****ING PRIEST to post metal bands?
And for two, musicianship is entirely debateable. It's not like any members of Isis display any great understanding of music in general, and Agalloch's drummer is about as drab as Halford is gay, and while their guitarist throw in a neat sweep pick about once an album.
There is some "evidence" against his opinion. Simply because I can.

Errr... I wouldn't say Isis are better at their instruments than Judas Priest overall. They beat them in the bass and drum departments, but guitar-wise Priest edges them out, and Rob's vocal ability in his heyday blows Isis and even Agalloch out of the water.
And yes, Jake is right about you being one of the people I meant, since half the time you only wrote crap like "lmao lmao lmao" which is hardly a convincing argument, and a pretty infantile insult as well.

It comes to the point where it's just bullshit. Everyone in the community thread messes around, but Eliminator's spam and strange attempts at trolling override his rare constructive posts. Plus, he follows Thor around like a ****ing dog.
I'm just saying that he posts in R&M like it's the Pit, which it is not.
Yeah I pretty much agree, I just do not see the humor in the things he does.

R&M isn't as mature and open minded as it used to be. Now it's mostly immaturity with a dash of elitism that gets way too out of hand.
LOL, shut up, you have a Tool avatar.

Is DT even considered a metal band? They have two albums that can be considered metal. The rest is rock.

The rest of the stuff is borderline rock and metal. Some consider it rock and some consider it metal. I consider them mainly rock.
