Death for sure.

This poll is very simple. Metallica, Judas Priest, Agalloch and Isis are average bands In my holy opinion, Death has it's moments, besides they deserve some credit for being the godfathers of death metal.

I actually love all the bands in the poll, with the exception of Isis.

Agalloch are very talented musicians but for some reason I find them average, In my country, folk metal is very ordinary so I often hear things more complex than Agalloch.

Metallica in last = Disgrace to heavy metal.

Since they have no chance of winning, I'll go with Priest. Can't deny the lengthy 2-3 decade careers (and still going) these two bands have had and tremendous influence they have on the metal community.

I guess it's not too bad if Death wins too, since they've had a good lengthy run too. Other two bands are too new to be considered top heavy metal bands imo.

Influence is meaningless when you're putting out shitty albums.

lionelhutz88
03-14-2007, 11:19 PM
Death easily. They are one of, if not the most respected band in metal history. It is almost impossible to find someone who genuinely hates Death for a legitimate reason.

PepsiMetal
03-14-2007, 11:48 PM
Influence is meaningless when you're putting out poopty albums.

They certainly wouldn't be an influence to thousands of musicians if their first albums were load and reload. ;)

Every band that has had this lengthy of a career has put out some of the most amazing work, and some of the crappy stuff.

If we are going to choose bands just becasue of their so called "lengthy career" why the **** are we voting? that's crap dude.

Lengthy career is experience, and experience is important in everything.

Good musicians and bands will last a lifetime. But as you can see these days, nu metal, and alternative bands come and go, release an album or two, then call it quits. They influence no one, and their music is forgotten a couple of years later.

Oh and I'm not saying lengthy music career is all that matters, but it's certainly important as it proves they can keep it running forever and they've established a strong fanbase to support them forever. Metallica and Priest will never loose their fanbase, and their music will be listened decades from now.

It would be same as if we had some hot pop rock band of 21st century beating out Beatles in a poll. The Beatles weren't exactly the most technical band in the world, their music was fairly simple, however, they changed their genre forever. They wrote good music, people loved them, people still love them and will always love them. That's what makes a good band, imo of course.

Not that any of this matters, as these Best Bands polls are just a popular opinion where the poll is taken. There isn't truly the best band.

Grumma
03-14-2007, 11:59 PM
The Beatles would never win against a pop rock band cos their fanbase wouldn't use the net :p

If experience was everything, don't you think Metallica would be improving?

Inspiration is everything man. If a band is still kicking *** 50 years after they formed, then maybe I'll give that some credit. But as far as I'm concerned,(and as far as Metallica's fanbase is concerned..) Metallica is no longer kick ***.

heavy metal kid
03-15-2007, 01:40 AM
I still think Metallica kick ***, at least live, I saw them in 2004 and they were great, such an energy and the sound was great.

I didn't vote for them because I don't think they deserve the best metal band tittle; still, they are one of the most influential and important bands in metal history.

It's funny how Metallica fanboys used to bother me like 2 years ago, now the "Metallica sucks!" bandwagon is the one that bothers me.

Lenghty career does not guarantee experience, influence and/or quality. The Sex Pistols for example only released one album and influenced an entire decade.

That was possibly the absolute worst altering of a band's name, ever. You would have done better with Judas Gay, or FU[font=verdana]CKINGQUEERARSERAPING PRIEST :-/

It's not suprising Judas Priest is beating them, but Agalloch is a million times better.

They're kind of the same. Both made the same song 40 times, then changed styles and made a different song 40 times.

lmao lmao lmao

Well, Death certainly didn't create heavy metal.

In fact, you can trace Heavy Metal back to Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Deep Purple and even the harder prog rock bands of the late '60s. So it's not really a lmao lmao lmao statement.

If Metallica is overrated in general, then they're underrated on these forums. Correct?

and because frankly, the beatles are mediocre.

Influencing generations of music, and having a huge fanbase after all these years puts them above mediocre level no matter what.

Sure you can always market your CDs and music to sell gazillion records, or play ridiculously technical and speedy solos, shred every chance you get, look cool, etc... but you can never just say, "Ok I'm going to become influential to thousands of musicians in decades to come."

but the rest is bad

Is there a band that doesn't have bad records? I highly doubt it.

St. Anger was a huge risk that they took, going completely opposite of everything and everyone, which is why it's hated. It's really unfair to call Black Album, Load, and Reload, Bad Hard Rock albums. They're just bad cause Metallica (MoP guys) released it, if some no-name band released it, it would have put them on the map instantly.

To reiterate what others have said, influence does not equal quality.

Completely opposite of everything and everyone? St. Anger sounded to me like they ripped off the trendy nu metal (aka SOAD) scene of the days. No one would dare to say a word if they turned jazz or prog or classic rock or gothic or I don't know what. They're hated because they CHO$E to follow the stream. "But they felt this direction suited them best!" And it is totally coincidental that the direction they took was the catchiest and the most profitable at the time?!

We can accept that metallica have emotional value to some because they got them into metal or into music in general through a couple of unquestionably good records but enough is enough. Thank god, for the first time this forum showed some intelligence in the polls.

I think to an extent, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets were their 'artful' days. After the death of Burton, I can see why they might be meathead metal, it became all about the loud drums and guitars.

But songs like Fade To Black, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion, The Call of The Ktulu, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Battery, Fight Fire with Fire, Damage Inc, Disposable Heroes, Creeping Death, all have a certain level of 'masterful composing' involved in my mind.

I mean, granted I am a total Metallica fanboy, so the bias here is huge, but you have to admit, the songs from Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets were not piss attempts at writing music, they carefully made sure each note to each song worked, which, imo, is the art of their music.

To Live Is To Die is hands down one of the most epic songs ever recorded in the genre. So many bands have been influenced by Metallica just from that song alone. It pisses me off that they went in the direction they chose, which still doesn't make sense to me, that people forget who they once were, and accent on who they are today.

Yea and it's clear Burton was the best musician in Metallica as far as songwriting goes. Once he died, you could really see their work going worse and worse each time. I really doubt they would go this direction if they could write work to match their first four albums. James is a pretty good songwriter and all, but nowhere near Cliff. :)

They can always make a decent hard rock or metal album though, but those wont be what made Metallica a metal icon.
