Do you ever find that there are bands that you enjoy but for whatever reason, you only feel the need to own one album by them?
By this I mean, you like the band but one of their albums seems to sum all their good points to such an extent that you only really listen to that one album. I'm a bit of a record nerd (understatement) so if I like a band I tend to buy all of their albums and do geeky things like listening to them all chronologically in one sitting - which is epic when we're talking about Sabbath!
For me, well I love Deicide but when I say that I mean I love the first album. I have Legion and Once upon the Cross and although they're good they just seem exactly the same as the first album but just not as good. I also bought Scars of the Crucifix and it was rubbish.
Other examples:
Dark Tranquility - 'The Gallery' is such a genre-defining moment that I've never felt the need to get any other albums (although I've heard most of them - and lost interest after Projector)
Hecate Enthroned - I've known about them from years and did a gig with them before 'Upon Promethean Shores' and was never really interested. But then they released 'Kings of Chaos' which is such a great piece of blackened death metal that it is a regular on my CD Player of death. But then (and I really don't know why) I never bothered to pick up or listen to any of their other albums.
Obituary - although this is a bit of a cheat because there's actually two albums I worship: Slowly We Rot and Cause of Death. Heard in isolation I am sure that The End Complete is a good album but it loses its impact when heard in context.
Lykathea Aflame - another wierd one because they've only released one album, but if they released another, I wouldn't buy it.

I do know what you mean. 'Gallery' is an amazing album...but Fiction has really blown me away. I love cd's so after I get one from a band, I'll usually experiment and track another one down and try it out so I'm never really limited to one album from a band. But there are those albums that all you need is one to sum up the band.
I have the same for Sodom - Agent Orange, it's a kickarse album and I can't really see the point in listening to any others.
Also, Stratovarius - Destiny is the peak of the band, and everything else just doesn't cut it quite as well.

I feel the same about Deicide.
other bands that applies to are
Possessed (Seven Churches)
NWA (Straight Outta Compton)
Entombed (Left Hand Path. Clandestine is alright but I always get my Entombed fix from LHP.)
Mayhem (De Mysteriis)
Suffocation (Effigy of The Forgotten)
Blind Guardian (Somewhere In Time)

Agree wholeheartedly with those (can't really comment on NWA or Blind Guardian, in fact I struggle to decide which I like least).
And just for you I'll add Rage Against The Machine "Rage against the Machine". Another genre-defining moment, but never felt the need to hear any more.

UneXpect - We, Invaders was an awesome EP. Their first full-length, Utopia, was awful. In a Flesh Aquarium was better, but still not up there with that EP.
Otherwise, I really can't think of anyone.

I'd disagree about RATM but I'm a fanboy. It's easily their finest moment though.

Hmm...MDB had other albums that were great, but I guess that would be "the" album if you were to get only one.
My pick would probably be Aghora. I absolutely love their S/T...probably one of my favorite albums. They should have disbanded after Malone+Reinert left, though..."Formless" is pretty damn terrible, even with Reinert guesting a few tracks.
The new Dimmu Borgir album is actually listenable, whereas the past few albums are not and the early stuff never really interested me.
Naglfar - Sheol. Could never really get into their other stuff, but I'm crazy about this one.
Ayreon - The Human Equation. His earlier stuff is too cheesy for me, but that album is amazing.

Bastard, I love Formless. :(
Hmmm.
Earth - Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method. Their other albums just feel pretty generic and boring to me, but this one is amazing.
Folkearth - By The Sword Of My Father. I hate their other albums, but once again this one is great.
I think there's a couple more but I can't remember.
I'll pick the Earth. Because Drone is a hard genre to get into or innovate in, and they did just that, made it accesible and awesome, and completely different.

+1
Same goes for Mayhem.
I have a heaps of bands I just like one album from. What I can think of from the top of my head:
Cryptopsy - None So Vile [though Blasphemy Made Flesh can be pretty cool to]
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
Mr. Bungle - California
Guns N' Roses - Appettite For Destruction [UYI albums have a couple of good songs between them, but I can't stand listening to the full things]
Pig Destroyer - Prowler In The Yard
A crap load of music that's not Rock or Metal. Mostly Rap.
That'll do me.

I second De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
Probably more, but I forget.

The old stuff is lolterrible and this one is worth listening to. Generally if I like a band, i'll always have all of their work.

Slayer - Reign In Blood
Oh, yeah...them. :p Mine is South of Heaven...Seasons is ok and RIB is fun for about 5 minutes, but everything else they've done blows IMO.

Yes
Megadeth - Rust In Peace

No! That's madness. Both bands have changed sooo much over their careers that to say one album is enough is silly. Compare the (quite fantastic) crossover of "Animosity" to "Deliverance"

I don't know if I agree with this, they have three (I think?) fairly different albums. It'd be like limiting yourself to Ulver's metal work and ignoring their later material, or vice versa.
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northen Sky
Mayhem - DMSM
Autopsy - Severed Survival (omg I hope Jondur doesn't impale me)
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness (from what I've heard anyway)

Wow! You might as well have walked up to me in a bar, spilt my pint and tried it on with my girlfriend!
I mean really! For a start 'The Somberlain' is better, ignoring 'Soulside Journey' and 'Transilyvanian Hunger' is denying yourself much pleasure, i almost agree on 'Severed Survival' because it is such a great album but still I think Mental Funeral is also a classic, and finally Morbid Angel have four more classic albums - and Domination.
Everyone seems to be agreed on DMDS and I think that's fair. Deathcrush is an interesting piece historically, but are they classic songs? No.

Totally agree about this one. Frames is one of my all-time favourite metal songs and plus I think the musicianship in this album surpasses a lot of other albums made around the same time. Plus I just found out about Cynic at the same time so it double awesome for me! :smoke:

Carcass. I have Reek of Putrefication, and I don't really see what the fuss is.
Dissection, too. Where dead angels lie is all you really need. I enjoy the Somberlain, but I don't care for it too much.
Meh, I'll think of more.
On Jondur's...I love the first three songs on Scars of the Crucifix, but the rest of the album sucks, and I would check out The stench of redemption, because it's their best yet, IMO.

I haven't got much of a problem with grind, I love some of it, but it has to have original aspects to it to hold my attention for long.
Jono is in all likelyhood correct. There isn't any grind on Necroticism at all. It's all pretty midpaced for the most part.
Wow! You might as well have walked up to me in a bar, spilt my pint and tried it on with my girlfriend!

It hurt to type that knowing that it's your thread :p. I don't mind the other Darkthrone, but I don't feel the need to listen to them and as far as Morbid Angel goes, nothing captures me the same way as the first album.
So there ya go.
