I know he has fans here, and I searched and still found no thread!

So with a new album coming our way soon let's discuss in anticipation!

I just read his full biography at http://www.hevydevy.com and just found out he has Bipolar Disorder  I felt dumb being such a fan. It made a lot of things Devy related make sense.

Yeah, I was unaware that he was bipolar, but it makes total sense.

New album? Is that a Solo one, a SYL one, or something new?

Huber

Solo album, supposedly continuing the Synchestra style. He announced the name let me find it again...

Ziltoid the Omniscient is the new title. A much better than the previous title "The Mighty Masturbator"

"The Mighty Masturbator"

Huber

Now that I'm seeing it more and more I'm starting to think maybe that was the better title.

Well, I have to say that I'm much more a fan of his music than of his character... ^^ (Okay, without his special character he probably would not create music the way he does, so... erm... never mind! ;) )

In any case I love his solo projects and I am discovering his SYL stuff now, too.

Ziltoid the Omniscient is okay as a title, but The Mighty Masturbator would have been lovely manic still...

I saw SYL at Download and he's a brilliant frontman and Aftermath has to be one of the heaviest sogns ever. I haven't actually checked out anything else related to him though.

I saw the Devin Townsend Band w/ Opeth last year as well as Strapping and both times Dev blew me away. He had such charisma and stage presence...not to mention he is a brilliant guitarist.

SYL is so bad, it's basically unbelievable.

Anyway, I loved Synchestra at first, but after a while, I realized that there's only a handful of very good songs, and a bunch of filler songs, or so it would seem. None of his other material has struck me that hard either...

That youtube video is awesome though, good find.

Yeah, it really does. When I found out it was a minor epiphany :p

Synchestra is one of my most favorite albums now. The amount of layering on it is ridiculous.

I though Devin was done making music for a while? I'm not complaining though. More Devy is always good.

^Nah, that's just Strapping Young Lad. His solo project is still going strong.

Dr. Jake Destructo

I can live with that combination. :p

Huber
03-12-2007, 10:55 PM
Yeah him making solo records doesn't mean tons of touring so he can do that without taking a lot of time away from his family.

If you haven't listened to Terria and like a handful of songs off of Synchestra I'd recommend it. Check out the song Deep Peace.

Well that's just plain gay. Throw that Canadian baby on a bus and come to a venue near me is what I say!

Actually it's a pretty respectable act coming from such a nutcase.

Huber
03-12-2007, 11:05 PM
Well that's just me coming to that conclusion. After hearing this and that about wanting to spend time with family but still having time to make a solo album and the ambient album I have a feeling it's a touring issue.

It's here my friends!

Seems like a heavy DTB album full of humor so far.

Darn right!

No but really must there always be someone to immediately rain on the parade so bluntly? He coulda just said, "I didn't like it". And I wasn't serious I'm well aware of how Kage works.

Never been a fan of anything he's done, really. And holy balls is he an ugly son of a bitch.

That Boogie Woogie video was pretty funny, though.

The album is like one of those jokes you just wish he would stop telling so you don't have to keep forcing chuckles, spread out over an hour of ungodly bland music and old tricks he's been doing his entire career, and not a single interesting bit of music to be found anywhere.

Cocaine

While I like Devin's career, that about sums it all. He has to slow down and stop releasing albums that could barely pass as a B-Side comp.

I did some reading. Not just a joke believe it or not. It's based on a puppet show he made. I'm sure that DEFINETLY doesn't help the album's case, but I love the Devy sound and I have no problem getting more of it.

I still like DTB and SYL. Favorite has to be Synchestra.

Thought there were more fanboy's around here though.

I love Devin Townsend. Infinity and Ocean Machine and Synchestra and Terria are all great great albums. His schtick has worn thin on the new one, though, with no quality melodies or interesting oddities.

I thought he only made it because of a record company thing anyway.

I'm probalby wrong though.

Also the lack of live drumming makes it very underwhelming.

Huber
04-19-2007, 12:20 AM
Yeah I'm starting to get tired of the DKFH sound. Even some albums with acoustic drums sound like DKFH it's almost sickening.

Dude I saw your avatar on the front page of the newspaper this morning and it was relating to the dickhead from the Virginia Tech incident :s

Im fairly new to Devin and SYL. Well not so much new just that I've had the same downloaded songs from Alien since summer. But I've rdered City through amazon which should be here soon :smoke:

Huber
04-19-2007, 02:08 PM
City is amazing. If you listen to any SYL, listen to City.

But almost everyone agrees their is a lot more going on for Devin Townsend in his solo projects.

I'l check into his solo projects a bit later on.

I think the new album is just making fun of concept albums in general. Even so, it's bland, childish humour with recycled Townsend riffs that makes for a terrible, terrible album. Easily his worst.

Devin is currently masterminding the production of the latest masterpiece from Darkest Hour. He really has taken them to a new level. As good as his individual talents are, listen to DH's last album, and this new one coming up. The man has turned them into a legit metal band. He's a genius!

Synchestra, like before, has not impressed me compared to Terria.
Someone!
Tell us some sweet songs to listen to.(Glances at Shattered Future?)

Synchestra seems like (mostly)boring 3/4 shitty riffs, and other stuff that makes General Discussion discussion more interesting. :|

Oh and,

DOES ANYONE HAVE A TORRENT OF INFINITY?

Nope. I have the album though.

From Synchestra:

Triumph
Babysong
Vampolka/Vampira
Gaia
Pixillate
Notes From Africa
Sunshine And Happiness

All are ace tracks.
