i am thinking it will consist of three dimensions:

1) type (art music? popular music?)
2) depth (low brow? mainstream? counter-stream? high brow? camp?)
3) diversity (specialized on just one particular artist/set of artists from one type and depth? many artist/set of artists from many styles?)

what do you guys think so far

#1 could get confusing with early jazz. When does jazz become pop, and when does pop become jazz? And is "wank jazz" ala mahavishnu really art music? And what would we call John Williams's crossover work?

I still disagree with the premise of "art music" compared to "popular music."
