View Full Version : Recommend some good heavy metal...

Excluding death metal. Seriously...it's very difficult for me to enjoy anything from the genre with the lack of variety in both lyrical subjects and moods (all death/black/doom metal songs seem to attempt to evoke the same sense of brutality, fear, and/or sadness). Not to mention the vocal style. Though I suppose you could call maudlin of the Well, who's music I do like, death metal...but that would be using the term loosely. Anyways, this thread wasn't really meant to be a rant about death metal, so much as being a way for me to ask for recommendations of good metal bands that aren't death/black/doom/etc.
Examples of modern metal that I DO like: Mastodon, Trivium, Lamb of God, (as previously stated) maudlin of the Well.
Yeah, not much there. Which is why I made this thread.
Metallica yay!
Seriously.

Check out Root's later work. They were a black metal band, but their later work is just really dark, epic and all around badass. Got a real doomy feel, and their vocalist has the deepest voice I've heard in a long while.

Or if you're too lazy:
In Flames, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Korn, Evanescense, Children of Bodom.
...
Okay, some serious answers:
Arcturus, Orphaned Land, Jesu, Novembre, Vintersorg, and Yndi Halda.
Yndi Halda isn't metal, but you still need to check them out.
Welcome to the forums, but next time, don't be an *** towards any other genre. At least half of the people here listen to Death Metal/extreme metal derivatives, and you'll surely just be overwhelmed by smart-*** posts such as mine.
I agree 100% with jcs497 and his Orphaned Land suggestion. Great band.
Oh gross. Lamb of God and Trivium? Just give up now.

Thanks but I already have all of their good albums.
I'm really looking for modern metal bands, or at least more obscure early metal bands. I already have stuff by Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, etc.
Then there are power metal bands I listen to...albeit rarely. I didn't mention them at first because I'm not looking for anymore power metal really...Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Avenged Sevenfold (meh, I consider them power metal. It's got that cheese factor and the right sound...), and Kamelot are enough for me. But...well...what the hell, if anyone knows of anything really good I suppose I'll take power metal recommendations too.

I don't really think I was being an ***. Personally, I just don't like death metal. I know for a fact that there are people who will laugh their asses off at some of the stuff I listen to. But I'm not gonna flame them or change my musical preferences to be cool. Oh yeah, and thanks for the recommendations. I'll check them out.
Chill out, jcs. He just said that he didn't like extreme metal. That's not unreasonable. It kind of sucks.

Lost Horizon have only two albums, both of which are essential to the Power Metal genre, but I'd start with 'Awakening the World'. Manowar, go for either 'Battle Hymns' or 'Kings of Metal'. Helloween start with 'Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I' and for Hammerfall I'd start with 'Legacy of Kings'.

Yeah, going to have to agree with Apocalypticon.
Drudkh are not overrated, they just have had a decent amount of attention lately due to their masterpiece Blood In Our Wells.
As Coverge has recieved a hefty amount of cocksucking through out alot of areas of the forums.
Also Drudkh doesn't have horrible vocals

Converge are recognized as being as good as they are by the punk, metal and hardcore communities. Drudkh is a band lots of Black Metal fans like.
See the difference? Overrated is meaningless when you're as amazing as Converge. Jane Doe is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. I like Blood In Our Wells, but it's nothing to phone home about.
Either way, they're both the total opposite of what the TS is looking for.

Converge merged a heavy thrash and extreme metal influence with a background in hardcore and then added a cacophonous twist. They're one of the hardest bands to pin down and even beyond their esoteric sound they're widely credited for their pure pwnage. They perfected the breakdown, they made dissonance cool, and they create some of the most passionate and legitimate music around.
