So this saterday im entering a drum off at a small drum store. It is basicly a solo kind of thing. Prizes range from a roadland elec. kit, to heads, to sabain cymmbal packs. not bad I say.

Is it Sam Ash?

If so, then the judges determine winner by audience. But if not, just go to youtube/drummerworld and check up videos and play your chops and groove. Make sure its original and not boring.

Ya, helps to know what it's being judged on. And the length of time you have to work with.

Try and at least work out a structure, have some repeating phrases or feels, etc so it's not just random chops being blown around.

A common idea is to think of a melody, or melodic phrase and start simple then expand on it, play aorund and return to the simple idea on occasion, etc

i agree with jos on the fact that you need some repeated phrases and to start with something simply and solid and then expand.

also i think it would help if you focused on a strong beat or groove instead of playing some boring technical stuff. if the judges are not drummers and unless your playing is exceptionally tight, you should stay away from the slow technical crap amd stick to a nice groove.

Think melodically and use it as the basis of the whole solo.
Maybe put it over a funky foot ostinato...

The use of brushes is quite a good one too especially to start the solo off. Its kinda technical and will add a good variation not only to your solo but to the whole contest as I doubt many people will use brushes in their pieces.

At the end, try a bit of stick trickery....do it with a smile on your face too. If you mess up, its cool - people will enjoy it and take it as a bit of fun and it won't come across as part of the actual solo even though it really is...(if that makes sense?)

Start with a groove, go from there.

What kind of judging is this going to be?

If it is by non-drummers do blast beats.

If it is by drummers groove like no tomorrow, do a "chord progression" except... Well... With your drums. The best drum solos have a central "Theme" and is split up into different parts.

So do you basic "theme" and go off on a tanget with it. Do weird cowbell (ride bell) stuff on it, turn it samba, turn it funk, turn to rock, have comic relief. Maybe start the solo of with a b-h-s-h-b-h-s-h-change dynamics A LOT, build up energy, let the energy EXPLODE and then bring it back in to a soft finish. That is what I love.

Do some thing interesting, something that will stick in the mind, bust out a little fill on your lap, drop you sticks and play on your body with your hands, BE REMEMBERABLE! (sp?)

That is my advice, take it if like it.
