For some reason, i am unable to make the search function on these forums actually work, so i'll ask if i can borrow your search functions:P.

Could someone please find a back-thread on the topic of pedal cleaning? I've noticed a faint squeek in my Janus pedal, and although i'm 90% sure i know what to do.....i feel that i'd better make it 100%.

The more comprehensive, the better. I tried Google, but found nothing of much use to me. The main thing i want to be sure of is which parts i should lube up. Are there any areas i should avoid?
Also, how exactly do i go about applying the lubricant? I figure i should take the pedal apart first....but after that i'm a bit lost. If it has a nozzle, do i just spray it on? I heard someone say i should soak the parts...does that mean to completely submerge them in it?

Well, you get the idea. I'm young and poor and don't want to do anything regretable:P.

(p.s. -I'm terribly sorry if i've broken any forum rules......i have a feeling that i did...: \)

get something non-corrosive and just lube up everywhere that a moving part (anything that moves when you move the pedal up and down) comes into contact with any other part (moving or not). i usually borrow my dad's stuff he uses to oil down his gun parts when he cleans them.

Ok, that seems easy enough.

But i'm still not sure exactly what to use as lubricant. I live in Australia, btw. Any recommendations? Somethings i'll have to go out and buy, or something that will probably be lying around?

i think i remember hearding somewhere that WD40 is a bad idea but i could be wrong. try going to a hardware store and asking for a non-corrosive lubricant.

wd40 is a bad idea, don't even think about it, i'm 99.99% posative, not exactly sure why, but yeah.

WD40 will leak slightly and leave dark brown stains on your carpet/whatever you've got under the pedal.

I know Tama makes a special oil for it's IC's. Dunno what's in it, but i'm sure you can find something similar somewhere. As wesm was saying, gun parts oil would probably be the right stuff. check out your local, err, gun show?

Gun lubricants would be great. If you have a sporting store, even like Sports Authority if you are in the U.S., go by and pick up a bottle. They are bound to have some.

Bahaha. Yeah, i'd heard about WD40 before, have already noted to avoid it:P.

I dunno if i'll be able to easily get any gun-lube. I'll try, though.

Anyone else?

...

Josiah? :P

Hey man...I found motor oil to work wonders. Im sure you have some in your garage. If not, it should set you back a few bucks.

I believe that wd-40 is a degreaser.

Now that sounds like a simple option!

Unless anyone disagrees, i think this sounds like the way to go.

Now, how do i actually apply it?
Pull the pedal apart? I assume....

I had a squeak soming from my janus pedal, after an increasingly frustrating search, I found out it was coming from inside the shaft.

Locating it is frustrating as hell, but when you finally get it, oh its just wonderful

But dont go with wd40 as someone said all gunky, I used general purpose oil (like motor oil kinda)

#3 Pedal Cleaning One thing I Will STRONGLY advise against.. Never ever spray your Pedal down with wd-40, this will cause the worst Grease and grim trap you’d ever imagine, I’ve done it once and Learned painfully from my Mistake, A Piece of a Advice Don’t Do it! As Far as Cleaning your Actual Pedal again use a Dry Towel and go around all the base and pedal board area’s, Blow the Dust out from it and Make sure there’s No Build up. For People With Chain Drive Pedals, Take a Simple Q-tip and Dab Some Motor Oil on it, then apply a Little to your Chain to keep it smooth and Quite, For your Spring Take them off the pedal and Soak them in Motor Oil, this will Stop any annoying Squeaks.

Be sure to check the drum lessons and see if somebody has posted something on it.
