Okay, just a quick, noobish question:

I have always used rotosounds swing 66's for my 4string, but now my local store doesn't sell them anymore, so I wonder what of these brands would get closest (regarding tone, feel is not as important):

Ernie Ball
GHS Boomers
D'Addario XL
DR

Those are the ones that caught my eye at the store, feel free to suggest other brands that match the criteria as well...

I played the rotos for years, then the GHSs and then the Ernie balls, and now DRs. so of those, I think the GHS are closest in terms of tone.

I switched from the Swing 66s to DR lowriders a few years back and I love them. I like the tone better, and they get better as you play them.

Plus, I have come to loathe stainless steel strings, but the DRs are excellent. I never tried GHS strings and D'Addario's are weak and poorly made imo.

Personally, I would say that DR Highbeams are the closest in sound to the Rotos

It's a toughie, as I really dislike Rotosounds, but maybe some DR High Beams? Those are pretty bright.

dont buy d'addarios. they are exactly like ernie ball except the ernies will take a much longer beating. other then that I can't help you. I've found rotosound to be the least like any strings I play.

D'addarios are MUCH brighter than Ernie Balls.

Any reason why you can't just order a few sets or rotosounds offline? I also like rotos but I like DR's as well and recommend trying some.

Thanks for the replies guys, seems like opinion varies a bit, but DR got the most votes, perhaps I'll check those out.

Well I don't feel like ordering strings alone, when the postage costs as much as an entire set.

Can't you get them from a site like stringbusters.com cos I bet even with the packaging they'll be cheaper and you can still get the rotosounds

Good point... International delivery is only £2.50 from stringbusters and the rotos are pretty cheap from them too...

Yes, I only found one store in finland that sells them online. And I don't have a credit card to order from around the world...

I think you should buy different types of strings everytime, then after a while you'll probally find your "cup of tea" :) I like Ernie Balls and GHS, pretty similar sound, but Ernies are a bit more high-mid/bassy which I like.

i'd say: nothing comes close to Rotosound

just like EB and DR it's really a stand alone brand

any steel roundwound same will sound similar. or at least more so than nickel. I would go with some DR high beams in steel.

EDIT: WTF old *** thread?
