View Full Version : My arms get tired!

When I'm playing my bass guitar and I'm not sure how I can fix this I have tried lifting weights and punching a punchbag but nothing seems to help.
When I was younger I broke both of my arms in an accident with a milk float and I had to have extensive arm surgery to help fix my damaged ligaments I was wondering whether this might be having an effect on my arms getting tired?
Thanks in advance. :thumb:

It's entirely possible, but I'm sure every bassist out there has had that problem. I know I did. Best thing to do is just keep playing. Stop if you feel any pain though. That is the most important thing. Play through the tiredness, push yourself to a new limit. The SECOND you feel pain, stop.

I've tried playing to my absolute limit before but my elbows always swell up like baseballs afterwards and I need to put ice packs on them and take some painkillers and then I can't play for a couple of days so I feel it really cancels out all the practise I put in you see?
Raising my strap height a couple years ago completely remedied this problem for me.
I tried raising my strap but then my friends said it wasn't as cool as when I had my strap lower down like in the Blink 182 video where Travis has his strap really low down the one from their second newest album? I'm not sure about playing with my strap high it makes me look really geeky and my bandmates wont like that since they all play cool with their straps low.
Thanks for the advice keep it coming. :thumb:

Yeah first of all...to hell with what your bandmates think of your image. Play your bass at a height that's comfortable for you.
Given the swelling information, I'd go to a doctor about it. He'd be more qualified to make an accurate diagnosis than any of us(unless, of course, someone here is extremely knowledgable about this kinda thing).

Anyway. A milk float is an electric thing that milkmen deliver milk on o_O I can't believe I just had to explain that! :|
Anyway, on another note, plenty of people play high and look cool. Timmy C for one.

It would appear so. Either that or he was attacked by a milk float that went crazy after hearing that it'd be taken apart, melted down and used to build shody cutlery or something.

Yeah first of all...to hell with what your bandmates think of your image. Play your bass at a height that's comfortable for you.
But all my bandmates are cool and play their guitars at a low height and smoke too and I don't want to be the odd one out playing my bass up really high.

I think it's just swelling of my bone membrane although I could be wrong I don't think it does any permenant damage but it means I can't play a show for longer than an hour or so.
What the hell is a milk float?
It's like a flat open van with milk on the back of it I don't know why it's called a milk "float" because it probably wouldn't float, they are slow but have crushing wheels.

**** them. Seriously. If they just care about image you don't want to play with them. You shouldn't have to wear your strap above your waist for punk-rock music (I get the feeling that is what you play?), but then only thing that should determine strap height is comfort. Raise it up if it makes you feel better playing, and if they have an issue with it tell them that either you wear your strap how you want or you will go find some real musicians to play with.

Klown, we're just kidding you. You should play through the pain, at least two hours beyond the pain, and then when you get the swelling you should lance them with a sterile knife. Just run the knife under hot water for like 15 seconds and then pierce the skin to let the fluids out.
Good luck, buddy.

*A badly handled medical issue could ruin a career - so if anyone posts about a problem like that, REFER THEM TO A DOCTOR. Do not post things like 'Just play through it!'.
That's the only serious response you need if it's an actual issue.
