right so ive been learning this wooten song, and it seems to be going fine.

except for the section which starts at 2:06

ive got the wooten sheet music, but on this particular section, playing instructions are a bit scant.

is there anybody who can play it enlighten me any? or is there a video of wooten or anyone else playing it which would help?

cheers in advance.

He is double-thumbing, then later fingerstyling the 16th notes on his G string i think, then using his left hand to tap out the lower notes. I saw a video once but I don't know where it is.

your left hand is playing the bass line by itself(hammering or tapping whatever you want to call it), the right hand is double thumbing muted notes on top of it

Video of him playing it live. He doesn't play it exactly how it is on the record, obviously, but you can see clearly how he's doing everything:)

ok cool

any tips on how to do that? like excercises and whatnot. ive got about 2 weeks to learn it for an audition, and i can do the rest of the song, more or less.

oh and what about fingerings when the muted notes turn to fretted notes?

Best thing to do is just get the bassline down so you can play it effortlessly with no thought. Then add the higher notes, just fret them first and once you can fret the high notes while hitting the bassline, start adding the right hand.

Do this all slowly and build it up. Good luck!

Edit : Just noticed you're from Scotland. Power to the Scottish bassists!!!

Realize that Vic actually has seven arms playing 3 different basses at once.... You'll need extra appendages and basses to properly play his tunes

EDIT: At least that's how it seems to those of us not blessed with "Chops 'o The Gods"

Ha, true. Forgot that what he can do with 2 fingers, most struggle to do with 10. Silly me:p

I am indeed. I remember coming back from America and seeing that phrase on a poster in the airport. Never has a poster been so honest.

I'll sell you my right leg for a fiver.

Hey my toes are pretty flexible. They'd be a great asset.

I'm from Glasgow too actually. Well just outside Glasgow...but it still counts!

youve got two weeks until an audition and you havent even learned your piece?

Since you asked this while quoting me I'll assume it was directed at me: No, I'm not from Scotland, I'm from the good ol' US of A :thumb:

Are there any tabs out there for this song? I've always wanted to learn it, but i haven't used tabs in so long i don't even know where to look anymore, since the big "tab crash" last year.

911tabs.com is your best bet.

I'm just going to be a jerk and go ahead and say that the only hard part of this song is the part after he's doing the muted DT with the bassline. In other words, when he starts playing the bassline and melody at once, that's a little tricky... :upset:

As far as i know Riouken is the only person on here ive heard play it.

But he changed it up a little bit.

Phil is too much of a jerk to post recordings, so yeah, I think Riouken is the only MXer I have heard do it.

I was looking at the tab last night and decided I want to learn it, but it will definitely be a project.

I decided to learn it yesterday on impulse. I took a look at it and cringed...

you know how i am with recordings haha. i played it right from the transcription, except for some minor position changes because wootens fingers are bigger than mine

I don't know about "only hard part" but maybe it's because i'm a n00b at the DT, but **** that parts so hard. In the video he tabs with his 1,2,3 fingers, then with his pinky he plays the melody and plucks the melody on the G.

Meh. That's the only part that has really given me trouble. Then again, I never gave it that much time. I'll learn it one day.

just slow it down and work on it.

spiff i do agree with you, i learned the whole minus that section, then went back and just worked on that for two weeks

LambofDeth

True, i only spent about a half hour on it, half drunk after my friends birthday.
I plan on working it out more tonight

Yeah, we've talked about it before and how I couldn't get that section. I could probably get it if I put in the time and effort, I just haven't.

The section with the muted DT and tapped bassline didn't take me long at all to figure out. I just broke up what the two hands are doing. Left hand taps a simple pattern (and mutes), right hand DTs the muted G. When I broke it up and looked at it like that, it took almost no time to get it.
