View Full Version : Weekly Ear Training?

Would anyone utilize a thread every week where I, or others, posted a few sound clips of riffs for people to learn by ear? I notice that a good amount of people want to learn songs/riffs by ear or just practice ear training, but they just can't find cool/helpful riffs to learn.
So my idea is maybe posting a few riffs each week that I've figured out by ear so that people can listen, figure out, and record so that I or others can check and see how they did. It would drive me and the riff posters to learn more riffs as well as give an opportunity for people to find good licks to learn. Most of the time you don't even have to work to remember licks for ear training, just to figure them out slow then play them at full speed, then you are done.
So, is this a good idea or no?

Definately, maybe we could also also send the tab or notation in a zipped file, so people can check and see if they were right or wrong after they're done working it out.

Yeah, I would be cool with this. I need to start training my ear, anyway.

Okay sweet. Anyone know of a good free program to splice parts out of songs? And also I want this to be a mutual contribution, in that other people besides me should post sound clips of riffs for others to figure out. Think of it as the Community Ear Training Thread.

audacity.
Okay cool!
Also, I don't plan on limiting this to bass riffs only. Learning riffs from other instruments such as guitar and horns can be just as useful. I find horns especially useful because learning horn lines teaches you how to leave silent space in your compositions, and they are also really really catchy most of the time:thumb:
The tab idea sounds really good too, and I'll definitely find some time in my busy college schedule to write up some tabs.
Another thing I want to stress is make sure you aren't posting whole songs. If you want to recommend songs to learn thats great, but I'd like this to be more about individual riffs that you can focus on, rather than worrying about a multiple part song.
With my first batch of ear training sound files I'll throw in a few tips and tricks to help people out who have never learned by ear before, and anyone else who has any thoughts can jump in too!

Cool idea. It'd be great if people posted a few recordings and categorize them by levels (easy, intermediate, hard).

Sauron, sticking with your avatar choice, something tells me that "But Anyway" needs to appear in the first batch.
I'm game to try this. Sounds fun and good for my ear.

I'll throw one in, I'm going to break my own rule and post a clip without tab, but I have to leave for work in a few minutes.

I'll give it a shot too. There should be a separate thread for the examples, though. Then the actual tabs and discussion could be in this thread. /my $0.02

BTW, should I put something new up? I was thinking some RHCP would do nicely.

That's the verse and bridge sections of the song, both sliced from the original track, and an isolated bass recording by me. I was thinking about including a Powertab copy of the tab for checking against, so let me know if you agree.

Haha yeah feel free to start posting. I haven't had time yet to splice some bits out of some songs, and when I did try audacity always squishes my song into 1.1 seconds and produces a loud shrieking noise when I press play. Any help with this?

What did you do? All I did was open the mp3 from the File tab.
BTW, what do you think of having a separate thread for posting the lessons and using this thread for discussion and whatnot?

That sounds good... I'll make one now.

hmm... I think this thread is a pretty darn good idea, I'm game for this. When I get home I'll give a stab at learning the song by ear.
