Lots of distortion, play in a weird time signature and just make mindless noise.

he seems to do a lot of that but on Wonderful Rainbow it seems like he gets more technical and taps a lot.

tune your bass like a cello, run your bass through 2 distortions (boss od-3 and something else), a bunch of octavers, leave your amp out in the rain, and shred.

Cello tuning is 5ths.

From low to high, you'd want to tune like this:

C-G-D-A

play a guitar

Well, no.

You see, the threadstarter clearly stated his request for us to help him in playing like the bassist of Lightning Bolt.

By playing guitar, you are certainly not playing like the bassist.

bleep_bloop

lightning bolt does not use a guitar
and both earth and sunn use a bass in addition to a guitar

edit: whoops looks like ben's got my back

sorry i was referring to sunn and i was under the impression that sunn had two members both guitarists using sunn bass amps

brian gibson is an awesome bassist.. the song ride the skies has really tastefull tapping.. and a lot of songs on hypermagic mountain are a lot more than mindless noise..

he uses a stingray 5 with 2 banjo strings into ampeg svt4 pro heads ( i think he stopped using them for a more digital setup).. he uses swr goliath 4x10 cabs with carvin speakers and some sort of sub then his pedals are a boss odb3 bass overdrive, a boss guitar overdrive, a boss octave pedal and a delay pedal which also has a loop function.

there is probably more to his sound but thats all i can gather from the dvd they have and from seeing them live!

Tune your bass in fifths with 2 banjo strings

Have shitty tone

Make a bunch of tuneless noise

Be liked by people on MX for some reason.

No, after 3 or 4 songs I really didn't want to.

My post was really overboard and uneccesary, but I really don't like them if you guys can't tell. :)

The 3 of those five you consider "incorrect" were opinion anyway.

Listening to "Dead Cowboy" right now.

Still sounds like **** to me.

If you can recommend a Lightning Bolt song where I can actually understand the lyrics, then I might change my mind.

dude, its noise, the lyrics dont matter, you aren't meant to be able to understand what hes saying or else he would get a better mic setup.

with Lightning Bolt, either you "get" it or you don't. "getting" it has nothing to do with the quality of your taste in music. If it makes any sort of sense to you, you'll probably enjoy it...if it doesn't, than yes it is garbled, tuneless noise

it's certainly not everyday, all the time music...but I still love it.

Everyone has their own opinion, none of which are "right" It's pointless to argue about it.

Brandon_S

That is true! I do agree with you,I like alot of music a majority of people on this forum may or may not like, and I stick to mostly "groove" oriented music and classical, along with some prog rock.

I just dont like metal never really have that much, never appreciated it that much either, but I wont bitch unless people start forceing there opinions on me haha.

yes i think that might be the best one to start with..

the lyrics to lightning bolt are hard to understand but the lyrics are quite cool.. dead cowboy starts off with send george bush to afganistan...

EADG, im being a bit of an idiot trying to make people like them, i think im trying to say that they arent all noise.. but i agree LB arent for everyone otherwise they would be a lot bigger than they are.

That song tricked me into likeing them, for one song. Then I listened to some of there other songs. I realized it was just noise, with just enough structure to keep it going. I hate that. As before stated. DFA 1979 > Thunderbolt.

"Once you get off the beaten path of chords and notes, any noise can be its own microcosm of song writing. There is a deep library of songs that go from G to C. There is not a deep library of songs that use a toggle switch and a wah pedal. It's a wide open road.”

Just because you dont like them doesnt make DFA better.

I really dont want to start a "what is music" arguement either :p They always end badly.

I personally enjoy both bands quite a bit but I see no reason to compare the two. Both Lightning Bolt and Death from Above 1979 play very different kind of music so other than being drum and bass duos there isn't much reason for arguments.

DFA and lightning bolt are only as comparable as far as instruments go. different tunings, different style of vocals, different playing techniques, different sounds (DFA has a synth in some songs, after all), even different sounding distortion and song structure.

i bet it'd piss people off if i said all jazz was the same, wouldn't it? maybe.

i can't get into "noise"... having said that i recorded about 8 "noise" songs and have them on my myspace and soundclick...

is ambient different to noise? someone explain. now.

deemo
02-03-2007, 10:23 AM
ambient is a form of "noise" depending on how it's done.
ambient can also be recorded nature or stuff like that.
ambient noise is like, having a guitar humming feedback at a relatively low volume, with other little, nothing too extreme, things going on.

Lightning Bolt's songs aren't freeform, everything is structured. There's lots of repetition as well.

Lightning Bolt are so much better than DFA it's not even funny.
