My sister has some speaker cabinets that she never uses. Theres 2 with 2 speakers in each cabinet. Its ment to be hooked up to a home stereo system, but can the cabs be hooked up to a bass without sounding completely horrible? If its possible, what type of equipment would i need?

Its more than likely that the speakers are intended for mid-range or full-range operation, not bass specific. Most home stereo speakers are separated out into a section for highs, a section for mids, and a section for lows. What this means is that they'll likely sound poor, but they may be functional.
As far as hooking them up, you need to tell us what type of connection the speakers requrie, and what the impedance of each cabinet is. Without that it will be impossible for any of us to accurately give you an answer.
If you're going to attempt this I would definetely get a good graphic equalizer.

I think the real issue with that (this is PURELY speculation on my part) is that if its a full-range setup using a graphic eq with any sort of power could result in overpowering the speakers rather easily. I don't think anyone can really answer any of the threadstarters questions until we know exactly what we're dealing with. 4 stereo speakers doesn't really yield enough info...

First you need an amp to power them and not just plugging your bass directly to the speakers. I know its obvious but my bands guitarist was trying to plug his multi effects pedal into a cab he just bought without an amp lol
Any kind of preamp will improve the sound alot and also be able to get a workable sound but it may end up being a rather brittle weak thin tone no matter what you do.
Good luck
