As far as I am aware Roland makes a Midi pickup which isn't all that expensive roughly $200AUD (so like less than 100pounds), mind you that figure is straight from the top of my head.
However what is the expensive part is the actual modeller/synth part that you plug the pickup into and they run at about $800 - $900 AUD.

Those prices seem about right. They will run cheaper in north america and the UK.

you could get the Roland clip-on one for pretty cheap ($200 i think) but a synth module doesn't have to be very expensive. any MIDI keyboard should be able to take the MIDI output from your bass and use it with any patch on the keyboard.

I have a pretty decent largeish keyboard I could run it through. Would I just be able to take the signal from the bass and run it strait into a computer though (and add patches and stuff with software) or does the signal need to be processed with some other hardware first?

im not 100% sure, but i think the MIDI pickup just sends out MIDI signals, so you'd probably be set.
