I would suggest the AKG c1000s, but I don't know what other's think about it.

ieee, that's low. are you using it just as cymbal overheads? The Behringer B5's have actually been OK if you get a non-faulty one.

there's always Shure's PG-81's....

Hmm, behringer B5's you say? I might consider one of those for $90.

they're what you pay for, but for 80 it's really not all that bad.

there's a chance you'll get a miffed one, though, so buyer beware.

Miffed being that it is flawed meaning that the sound isn't as good meaning that i should try to send it back if i think that it could be like that?

mmm, miffed as in some of the wires aren't soldered right meaning you get popping and/or screeching.

Could i open it up and clean it up? My dad is an electrician, after all.

yep! but that voids return policy if you really mess it up.

worth a shot IMO.

Since there are no PMs on this site i'll turn this into a fishbulb and chippy discussion thread.

I might have told you about the Phonic mixer that my brother bought, but i'll explain it here anyway.

So my brother bought a Phonic Helix Firewire 18 mixer off of ebay for $320 with shipping. He tries to install the firewire and it cannot finish the installation for some reason. He e-mails the guy who he bought it from and he told him that he could also not get it working. So my brother had to send it back and he lost out on $30 because of shipping both ways. He's looking at them again and searching ebay and found the MKII which is apparently updated and that is buy it now $350 and $40 shipping. He's trying to get it for $350 with shipping or at least lower than what he had it up for.

So, with that said, we're trying to get a little home studio goin'. What would you recommend for monitors or a good alternative?

Eventually i'll get an SM57 and a bass mic, probably a beta 52 or the well known AKG one for my drums then use two of those b5 mics for cymbals/toms.

What do you think for micing a guitar amp? SM57? Or maybe a condenser of some type?

Sennheiser E-609 or an SM57.

That Sennheiser looks nice from the little i've checked it out.

Do you know much about monitors?

EDIT: Better yet, i should probably go to homerecording.com or whatever that one site is and read up on that before i start asking you everything you know about music.

lol. www.homerecording.bbs is the forum too.

monitors... depends a lot on the room. always get active monitors, though.

I only need one overhead. for cymbals/toms

I would suggest an MXL990 Large-Diaphragm condenser mic. They're about $60 from Musicians Friend. I used one as a drum overhead on my acoustic kit and it sounds very nice.

You think that would be better than a Behringer B5?

Also, you cannot mix phantom powered mics and non phantom powered mics, right? So i would not be able to use a condenser microphone and an SM57 at the same time, right?

Chippy569

yes, you can -- just don't get your lips too close to a dynamic running on phantom (it sparks a bit... i zapped myself once. but i mean you gotta like have your mic in your mouth basically)

i really, really, really hate MXL's polished turds... they're noisy, staticy, flimsy, and made by a chinese 7-yr old kid with a sautering iron.

What about behringer b1s? Wouldn't i want a large diaphragm condenser for cymbals and toms instead of a pencil mic like the B5?

Chippy569

preferably! but you get what you pay for in electronics :)
