acceptabe?
unacceptable?
when i saw OLP play live, one of their opening bands seemed to have it as his signature move where he would smash one of the drummers cymbals with his headstock every now and then on a change.
it seemed ok when he did it the first time, then less and less every other time he did it.
I remeber doing it with a drummer once, it was only one time.
Pretty much just for shits and giggles, but more than about 3 times can make it a little much.
Acceptable, provided it is limited.

I've seen players get into the music and just do something off the wall. It's not much different than jumping, throwing the guitar around, or anything like that. It can work, just depends how much respect you have for your instrument and how expendable it is.

yeah it gets old fast. Some drummers don't care for it, either.

Prerequisite:
With drummer's permission = Acceptable
Without drummer's permission = Unacceptable
Condition 1 (only applicable if prerequisite is met):
If you don't care about dings in your headstock = Acceptable
If you don't want dings in your headstock = Unacceptable
...I've been writing engineering documents all morning... can you tell?

I have done it, but only lightly and not during a show. Key is to get permission. I know I hate people touching my bass without asking, so I wouldn't touch a drummer's kit without asking.

I do it all the time, rarley on purpose though :/
i allways seem to either hit teh drum kit or hit a band mate with my headstock.

I do it, sometimes, during practise just to be a butthead.
I don't full on smash it, though.

hmm
as a drummer soon to be bassist, i know that its a bloody bad idea
first, bass headstocks are a weaker wood than drumsticks. drumsticks get totally pwnd by cymbals, therefore youre gonna take a chunk out of your headstock.
second, you cant get enough motion with a bass to get a decent sound, so its pointless there
third, a bass has more momentum than a drum stick, and you cant pull it back as you do with sticks. this can bend the cymbals... not good.

My carbon fiber neck is harder than any wooden drumstick :thumb:

i was jamming with my friend who plays drums, and i smashed his crash cymbal once.
it was followed by a really akward silence, then we started playing again.
we have never spoken of it since:lol:

I don't do it because I wouldn't like the drummer getting up and hitting my strings with a stick.

You're going to argue that a wooden drumstick (more than likely hickory if I'm not mistaken) is harder than carbon fiber? Argue that any wood is harder than carbon fiber and I do believe that you will be in the wrong.

As a drummer, no.
If my bassist ever did that to mine i'd kill him.
As a user of fairly thin cymbals, metal tuners and cymbals will NOT mix.
Theres a chance you'll dent, bend or even crack the cymbal thus landing you in debt to your drummer.
Would you smash a bass for the hell of it? No. So dont break your drummers cymbals. Careless damage of cymbals isnt fair to your drummer.

Supposedly indestructible, but a couple of friends of mine have proved that to be a load of bollocks.
Anyway, as a bassist and drummer, I don't like hitting cymbals with my bass or having my cymbals hit by a bass, for the sake of both instruments. If you and your drummer/bass player feel otherwise then, by all means, do it.

its quite possible the crack the finish on the necks though! i have a friend with a stealth that has a chunk taken out of the neck from hitting a cymbol.. i would never do it with my status neck.. i have more respect for it thatn my other basses!

Did not realize "ahead" was a manufacturer. I thought he just had bad grammar (my mistake, sorry). That being said... I did say wooden drumstick in my original post :p
If we're arguing aluminum we could likely bring the old-school aluminum Kramer bass necks into the equation, but now we're getting pretty far out there...

We need to get together someday and let our status necks play together... who knows... maybe they'll mate and we'll get a free neck out of the deal

If a drummer started hitting my guitar with his sticks I'd eat him, but I'd only hit a cymbal with my headstock if he'd let me.
But I've seen videos of the guitarist of The Who (I can never remember his name) taking a cymbal of Moon's kit and laying the body of his guitar into it, which is a laugh to watch.

I do it all the time. Without permission. Drummers are lesser people who have no rights. But it's ok, because I let him use me as a drum in one song.
That's because i'm punk.
It's really just a bit of showmanship, which, just like jumping and swinging your bass, gets old real quick if you use it too much. Gotta mix it up.
I've done it, but I think it looks kind of lame, and it can damage your headstock and it leaves marks on the cymbal.
Not to mention drummers probably find it really annoying.

I've done many times, although it has never been on purpose. I've also tried it with my head, really bad idea, don't try it at home.

Worst thing I've seen is my singer put the cymbal between his teeth...then the drummer hit it. Not very hard mind, but still...ouch.

I remember going to a house show and a band (nickol richer) played and the drummer (matthew tortorice) brought one of his dads cymbols and after they were done, the band three day pass (at the time, rikerout now) came and played and the cymbol got knocked over by the drummers playing, anyways, during ricochet, the guitar player started kicking the cymbol while it was on the ground. I was standing next to matt and he was about to cry.

Most of the time it has happened for me, it was by accident. We were just playing with the music, feeling it, and I wasn't paying attention to where I was, so I would, accidentally, run into the cymbal.

if you're going to hit something with your headstock don't waste the energy on a cymbal.
smash the drummer right in the face. preferably with a bayonet/thrust type motion right to his eye socket. :thumb:

Having been hit in the eye socket with a bass headstock, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

Never done it live, but i sometimes used to smash the cymbals in my old band with my fist at band practice sometimes, only played live with that band once, and that wasnt even a proper gig so.
give me a graphite neck with 4 on one side tuners and i might do it :p

I tried it wasn't that great, the tuners are what actually took the blow and all that happened was I dented the cymbal and detuned my A string.

As opposed to the other metal called aluminium?

123, there's no difference between regular aluminum and the kind used in planes. The latter will likely be of higher quality than the regular, much in the same way the steel in girder for skyscrapers has to be better quality.
What matters is the manner in which something is built in aluminum, resulting in a lighter weight without loss of structural strenght, than say compared to the same construction made with the same amount of steel.
