is it possible to get the growl and harshness of a rickenbacker bass using a fender jazz through a laney R4 amp? iv tried fiddling around with settings but i cant seem to get it right. i just love chris squires (from yes) sound.

After what Geddy says, yes, get a sansamp.

^^Disagree. I can't really get the Rickenbacker tone with a Sansamp. Geddy might get the part of it that he likes, but I don't. So in the end: buy one. Everybody needs one.. Well atleast, at some point in the future I will certainly own one.
Wait..
Reminds me that I dreamed about having one tonight :amaze:

No, but he said Fender Jazz. Not really a Geddy Jazz :)

aha.. get some powerful pickups in that jazz and turn up the treble and the drive. :p
but ultimately get a Rick.

Yeah I thought I could get a bit of a Rick sound with my Jazz. Listen to Sacrifice Spring for Summer on http://www.sellaband.com/4for1
Harsh sounding, but still fat and a certain kind of growl in it. I recorded it with a condenser mic, bass scooped a lot & treble boosted a lot. :amaze:

IMO getting Rick tone requires more than just shaping a different instruments tone with a pre-amp or modding it. You'd need something that can completely duplicate all of a Rics specs and characteristics.
I'm not saying you can't get a similar tone, but hitting it spot on won't happen.

Well, a Rickenbacker is incredible punchy realy, so they have growl, and they have the ability to hit you pretty hard in the chest while still being very trebly.
i dunno, i have just heard them being played, never actually played one through a amp myself.

I've tried everything with Jazz basses to make them sound like Rics. I can get my Jazz to sound like Geddy Lee, but I can't get them to sound like a Ric. I did find a solution to that problem though. I bought a Ric.

powerfull pickups, shitloads of mids and a slightley overdriven amp should get fairley close.
I always know wen my battery needs changing, because my bass starts to sound like a rick.

uh i dont know how much an alder jazz weighs but my rick weighs so little i dont even feel it i used to have a G&L L-2000 and that weighed a lot more i really wouldnt worry about weight on a rick unless you are a really tiny person remember its alder AND its short scale
