I'm interested to know how to make remixes of songs, like adding a different guitar or drum tracks or mashing it up with a different song. Some people post up their creations on forums and I'm interested to know how to isolate and modify different tracks in the song like that. How do you separate all the different tracks?

Will I be able to do this in ProTools or Cubase?

Yes, I'm a novice.

You'll need the raw tracks, which typically aren't available unless you have a connection of some sort with the publisher or label of the original track.

There are exceptions. Sometimes an artist will provide raw tracks for the purpose of fan remixes on their website, or at other websites like ACIDplanet.com.

I suppose using very intensive spectral filtering you could remove enough background sounds from the vocals of some songs, but this is really more trouble than it is worth. Additionally, you run the risk of legal problems if you don't get permission to use a song for a remix before you begin to work on it.
