I'm using Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and I have a good vocal track, but it has breathing sounds in the background along to the singing. Is there an easy way to eliminate just the breathing sound?

Thanks.

Not that I can think of. The only thing that may be possible is to use a notch EQ filter to try to take it out. Not sure that would work, but if the breathing falls in a narrow EQ range, you might be able to notch it out. Of course that might also color the overall vocal track. I've never seen a spectrum analysis of breathing :-) , so I don't know what its frequency characteristics would be.

Mess around with the gate control levels. That is what is supposed to block out quiet sounds in the background like breathing sounds. I've never had much luck with finding a good enough setting but i've never spent much time on it.

Is the gate control on the mic?

No its usually with compression. Like a Compression Processor usually has Compression/De-esser/Noise Gate. If Cool Edit Pro doesn't have one under the effects, you can download one somewhere online.

Under the Dynamics Processing, there are several De-esser presets in Cool Edit Pro. Try using those (as said above), and it should help with the breathing sounds.

If you really want them gone you could always go through manually and silence all the breathing sections

but CEP should have a noise gate somewhere you can mess with

TRY noise removal, that may work.

It won't unless designate the breathing sound as the noise. Then it would probably screw up some stuff in parts where there is no breath noise.
