What exactly is drone?

I just listened to Boris' song 'Farewell' for the first time and the first thing that comes to mind is My Bloody Valentine. If that song is considered a drone song, than what's the difference between drone and shoegaze?

That song isn't a drone song. That's from their album Pink which has a lot of different styles.

If you want good drone, listen to Boris' Dronevil, Absolutego, and the Thing Which Solomon Overlooked; also, listen to some Earth.

I guess you could call it that; Boris rarely stick to any single style and jump back and forth between styles so often it's hard to pin them down.

Sunn 0))) was the first drone band I listened to. I liked them a lot... however there are better ones. There was this one unsigned one (I can't pin down it's name by memory) that put his whole album up for free. I thought it was decent. Earth is good, but I think they compare at Sunn's level. Boris is just bizzare, hence it's quite good.

Hmm, I remember hearing Earth a while back but I don't remember what they were like or whether I liked them or not. Also, I've only heard one Sunn 0))) song, It Took the Night to Believe, and I think it's pretty good. Is any of their other stuff worth listening to?

Ambient Black Metal and Ambient Doom Metal is good. I listened to this weird Ambient Funeral Drone song by a band I can't remember there name... it lasted an hour... it was weird... but entertaining. I wasn't high and in a german class, intresting results.

earth and sunn are pretty much the same thing: sunn = earth tribute band.
also amplifier worship and flood are dank.

They started of as EARTH tribute/worship, but they're quite different now.
I enjoy both Sunn O))) and EARTH aswell as other drone.

I'm now listening to another O'Malley/Anderson project.

"Feedbacker" is, I think, my favourite Boris song, though it's split up into five parts. It's very much rooted in the drone part of their sound, and it comprises an entire album (Feedbacker). Made Wata one of my favourite guitarists.

The only Earth album I like is Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method.

Sunn O))) is awesome. White2 is probably my favorite album from them, next is White1.

What I love about Sunn O))) is they have a more ambient edge, so instead of 30 minutes of guitar droning, you have a song like My Wall, with this absolutely crushing and frightening atmosphere and an awesome voiceover.

Nowai. Post rock is rooted in writing songs based around crescendos, they definitley don't do that often. Sure, they're very dynamic, but I wouldn't really call them that.
