As I have said before, Very astounding work.

I'm loving every instrument you're making there SoM.

/thinks about a possible custom.

That's a very well-made instrument, though i'm not a fan of wood pickup covers, barring those made from ebony.

Btw, does the f hole serve a purpose or is it just there for decoration?

Yeah it's semi-hollow body, so it certainly adds mechanical feedback when playing at high enough volume. Or if you stand in front of the speaker at lower volumes.

Wow that's ridiculous.

I've always thought customs were going a step too far and usually overdone but that's just beautiful.

edit: I don't think I could ever own a bass like that, I'd probably bump it on accident and then go kill myself.

Thanks all!

The lower inside point is actually rounded a bit for comfort. I don't notice it when playing sitting down.

Out of curiosity, how much was Bill charged for that bass?

"Well, my basses usually go for between $1600 and $2000, this one went a tad over that due to pickup covers and a lot of extra work caused by the spalt maple."

hope I don't get in trouble for a double post :p

Beautiful work SoM, how come you aren't one of those big name builders? The craftmanship on that bass looks close to that of alembic.

Simply Beautiful.

So many custom guys around here that know what they're doing. I know what I'm doing if I come into a bit of money.

Utterly beautiful, nice job.

I was planning on building something around the lines of that in second year of my college program actually...

Thanks for further inspiration.

Man, I love the work on your basses, but that body shape just doesn't do it for me. It's too... jagged.

Have you done any instruments with other shapes?

johnb73
02-06-2007, 09:42 PM
SoM if someone were to custom order a guitar or bass form you would you do a shape of their choce? say if they wanted one like a strat, tele,SG or Les Paul?

If you twist my arm a bit you might get me to do it, as long as the project as a whole is interesting enough. Not sure I want to get involved in carved tops though.

I have done other shapes, but not professionally. And not since I developed the Mjolnir template.

A bit off topic, but if I ever built basses professionally, I'd like to probably keep your choices limited to select body designs. (A bit hypocritical since I wanted something new from Jared.) It just seems that it would be a more concrete marketing strategy than coming up with a new design every couple of months. Recognition is a good thing.

1) how do you pronounce Mjolnir?
2) I love your design, im just trying to think of the future when i get one of your customs. Roughly how long do you take to build a complete guitar/bass?

Mee-'ol-nir

It is the name given to Thor's hammer.

It's 12 to 14 weeks depending on materials availability (not usually a problem) and the weather (cold shop, but I'm doing something about that :) )

awesome, i might ask my parents to get me one for graduation, id get it about a week before i move to Boston that way.
ill have to talk to you when the time comes.

Do you have any pictures of your shop as a whole? im curious how its set up and how large it is.
