So i bought a guitar off ebay for £15. It had no higher fret access, crap pick ups, poorly done paint work, wasn't wired properly, the locking nut didn't lock and a few other problems. After getting it set-up by a supposed professional, it still wasn't how i wanted it so i decided to completely overhaul its ***.
At the moment its completely stripped of everything and Ive taken the paint off. That proved to be hard. Sanding took me about 4 hours just to get the sides off. Brilliant results tho, nice wood with good grain and it came up very smooth. For the front and back i decided to use paint stripper for quicker results. Although i managed to shift more paint in less time, it still took a good few hours. There must have been at least 3 coats of lacquer on this beast.
I smothered it in the stripper and left it for 5 minutes with no results. I decided to leave it for another 15 minutes and found a brown sludgy substance had arisen. When i wiped it off there was no sign of paint removal so i decided to give it another coat. Coming back after a half hour, there was minimal bubbling but i decided to follow instructions and applied a second coat working into the areas that had blistered. After another half hour i went for a scraping and it barely took the paint off. I got a little bit annoyed and went samurai on its ***. I damn near slopped on half a can of paint stripper. This time it worked its magic, the paint had become all bubbly and ready for a second going over, so i gets me brush and start poking at it. The paint starts flaking off and I'm like "score, I'm getting somewhere", so i leaves it to do its work and come back a bit later. I decided to take a bit of wire wool to it this time and the majority of the paint came off. Theres patchy areas and it didn't really work on the corners but I'm not too bothered as I'm gonna sand it tomorrow. I shall keep you all updated and supply pictures each step of the way.
