A 97% on rottentomatoes says a lot. I'm seeing this friday I understand it's gotten limited release so who's seen it tell us is it spaktakular?
I've read all about it and I'm really excited.
Seeing it ASAP, if I can persuade my friends. Or I'll just go alone.
it was quite interesting and the cinematography was fantastic

rottentomatoes is usually pretty alright in their review accuracy, just becuase they pool together awhole lot of reviewers and users ratings, so that evens out the mainstream/indie fanboy biases

yea, but sometimes they're too heavy handed, which is why i like rottentomatoes, they even everything out. it's all the same level, the die hard INDIEists have the same weight as the reviewer for the national republican christian coalition so, that's a good thing, imo.

Okay it's gory because the main character's (she's a little girl) mother marries a viscious villainous military man. They're all in the woods where the captain is stationed to lead men against a militia, so a war is going on, there's fight scenes, the captain ruthlessly kills people, etc. And the fabled characters like Faun and the pale man are hideous and scary, it's just not a movie for little kids in the first place which is why there's gore. It's a fairy tale for adults.

Fantastic movie. It opened in my area last weekend, saw it then and was absolutely pleased with it, lived up to expectations. Considering going to see it again.
Has anyone seen the Devil's Backbone? I've heard it's a bit like this one. I've always kinda rooted for Guillermo del Toro because of the source material he's worked from in the past (Hellboy!), but Pan's Labyrinth is easily the best thing he's done that I've seen. Also probably the least overtly commercial, I guess.
thedeadwalk!
01-21-2007, 11:07 PM
Pan's Labyrinth seems to be more involved with the girl's fantasy world than the supernatural played a part in The Devil's Backbone. They both take part around revolutionary Spain which is a nice setting.
It's still not out around here. Chris is sad. :(
del Toro said one of the coolest things either about what he tries to do or just horror films in general: "The last man in the world sits alone in his room...when he hears a knock at the door." It's so simple and elegantly eerie that it's wonderful. I'm not sure if he made that up, but it's cool none-the-less, and the first I've heard of it.

thedeadwalk pretty much hit the points of this movie but, I just watched it and it has to be my favorite International movie ever and quite possibly my favorite movie. del Toro gave me a new look into fantasy and realism that a lot of other movies fail to do. Its hard to see that this movie will probably not be voted in for the Best Movie catagory because it is a very deserving movie. The main actress did a great job and del Toro should take pride in what he has created.

I thought there would be on the fantastical side of it, but it was all good. Have yet to really think and figure about the themes. Still it's top ten for me, the images, the sound (what was that language? I kid, i kid) were all great; totally new to me. First film of del Toro for me is a good experience.

It's nominated in the Best Foreign Language category and a couple other things.
I think in an interview Del Toro was explaining how the ending is open to interpretation, in terms of whether it was all in her head or what, but he said that his intention was as plain as presented. The clues to the reality of Ofelia's fantasy world are littered throughout the film. It wasn't the greatest ending ever but it didn't ruin anything for me.
After the scene with the rabbit hunters, I didn't care if Del Toro introduced an ending where alien invaders raped the Spaniads with laser powered 9 irons.
He well and truly won me from that scene onwards.

I heard all of Del Toro's films share similar themes (supposedly, there are connections between all of his films including Hell Boy and Pan's Labyrinth), so I guess if you enjoyed one, you might enjoy the other.

123 saw it last night and liked it up till the ending. I thought it was too cliche when they were like "Because you gave your own blood to protect your brother you passed" up till then it was a rather orginal movie it seemed.
obviously that didn't happen it was just her way of coping with death, dick.
(this might not be true, but it gives a number of different ways that you can interperet the end.)
It's possible that everything the girl did never ACTUALLY happened because she was trying to cope through the horrible spanish civil war /aftermaths run by a bad leader by living in a world of imagination.

Hellboy is only barely worth watching if you're a fan of the comic. And even then it's still pretty meh

Yeah you are right. I noticed that too. Most of Del Toro's films has something in common. If you saw Pan's Labyrinth and contented withe the ending then probably you will like Hell Boy too.

the devils backbone has a much much stronger connection to pan's labyrinth than hellboy, del toro actually called it the "sequel in spirit"
