I've been wanting to buy an Opeth album, but I just don't know which one, they're all so good!
So, I thought of Blackwater Park, but I'm also wanting to buy Ghost Reveries, which should be my first Opeth buy?
Thanks for the help

Blackwater Park or Morningrise.

Blackwater Park for the newer, proggier sound. Morningrise or My Arms, Your Hearse for a doomier sound.

I think I'll go with Blackwater Park
Great choice! :) You won't regret it.

Yeah, it's probably their best. It opened a lot of doors for me, musically, too. Which is kind of pathetic.

BWP and Morningrise are my favourites, so go with one of them.

Why is that pathetic?
Anyways, Blackwater Park or Still Life would be good places to start, as long as you're comfortable with harsh vocals. If not, go with Damnation.
None of them.
Bad Hobo! No change for you, today!

Damnation was my introduction to the band, and while i liked it i don't know if it was a good place to start though as it doesn't seem to represent the sound i heard from their other material.

Still Life or Orchid.
I'd go Still Life first for the great tracks then Orchid for the pure metal aspect.
Still Life cause it's the best.

Still Life is complicated though.
Huh?
Not any more complicated than their other albums.

I mean to get into. As a whole it's kind of weird but separate songs work just fine.

Not to hijack this thread, but Im looking for the name of an opeth song. Its NOT on BWP or GR. I hear it on the radio during a sat night metal show. The song starts out in 7/8 double bass, and it's quite lengthy. I know I'm giving you nothing to go on, but I don't know what else to tell you. The ending of the song is a long riff that reapeats for a very long time that has some staccato double bass riffage with some syncopation at the end of the riff, and at some point there is a fade in reverse piano note on the downbeat. any ideas?

Damnation because it's better than all of their other material easily.

Yeah but Damnation doesn't capture the sound I'm assuming he's looking for, based on the albums he was looking at. It's definitely one of their best, though.

where's the poll
the only three i own are morningrise, deliverance, and blackwater park. i don't need the other ones, but damnation would be acceptable if given to me.

Yeah but if I had answered the way he wanted I couldn't have stated my controversial opinion :p

I wouldn't even see it as controversial. I have three favourite Opeth albums, and Damnation is one of them. It's an amazing album, it's just sort of a downer sometimes.

I think you're after the song Wreath, on the Deliverance album.

Close, but he means the title track. Undeniably.

Aye, Wreath is in 6 and doesn't really have any of those other characteristics.

Damnation is the best Opeth album, Still Life creeping up behind it.

I just jumped to conclusions whne he said 'begins with drums' heh.
Anyways...I'd recommend Still Life. That's where I started and it still remains my favourite, thouhg I'm yet to pick up Orchid and Morning rise, or give YAMH a proper listen yet.
