I was wondering your stance on album leaks, considering all the talk lately on the subject.

I personally don't like leaks, I prefer to either get/buy the album or get it until it's released, because I don't know. I like to fool myself and think it's OK to wait until its release.

So please. Yeah discussion thread OMG.

Leaks mean I can hear the album before everyone else and be like "oh yeah suckaz I heard it first"

I download them, unless it's something I really care about.

If I were an artist whos albums were getting leaked I would be pretty pissed, though.

If it's an album that i look forward to, i'd wait until it actually come out. That makes it much more exciting.

The only problem you could have with leaks (morally, anyways) is the fact that you're downloading it. Besides that, sound quality and track labels/tags/whatever usually sucks. But yeah, this thread= "is downloading bad"= this thread does not deliver.

No sweetheart, I'm asking about leaks, that is albums that can be downloaded before release date, say downloading them before they get released officially.

I don't care about downloading. I think downloading is good.

Inform yourself.

No, I know what leaks are. But...what's the big deal? So someone gets their hands on an album before the official date that the record company decides they want to begin exploiting the band in question. **** happens.

We really need an :indifferent:, :meh:, or  smiley. I'd make good use of it.

I was just asking other people's moral (or physical, mind you) stance on it, there was no need to go all mental on it.

No mental here, just indifference.

I like leaks because they allows me to actually form an opinion that I feel is 100% my own without any outside influence from the rest of the crowd's opinions of the album as I will have heard the album before the masses.

Nah, leaks are silly, they might be unproduced for all we know.

I always don't want to get them, but I'm always too eager and can't stop myself. If it's an album I'm really excited about in advance, though, I end up buying it anyway - the leak is just because I can't stand the thought that I could be hearing it and I'pm not.

If its a band that Im not a huge fan of and want to check out, then I'll download it. If its a band Im a fan of, then I will wait and buy the album.

I download leaks fairly often. Most bands don't have a problem with it.

I don't think mine (at least for music) are much. I mean, I listen to bunches of bands that everybody I know, including this forum, hates. I don't think you could possibly be THAT weak-willed??

I would say nay, the wait for an album release is part of the artistic expresion of the bands, adding an experience beyond music, just take a look at Chinese Democracy.

That album will be so terrible. I wouldn't even download it if you paid me 5 billion dollars.

I'm not. But everyone is influenced by others. And I feel that the only way to have my opinion be 100% my own is too listen to something that no one else around me has so that I don't get confused between what other people are telling me to think about the album and what I'm actually thinking about the album.

I guess...but why's it matter? The other peoples' opinions BECOME yours, and then all is well! You're probably gonna be living another good 50+ years at the least, why worry about a single opinion being uninfluenced by others' when 99% of your opinions throughout your life will be?

What's the point in going to his other 99% of his opinions when he's jus mentioning he likes the fact that he makes an opinion on an album that wasn't influenced by others ?

I don't agree with it, because why even set a release date? You're more likely to buy the CD if it is "leaked" on the same day, over being leaked a month ahead of time. I just don't see why people rush to get it, I have enough willpower to wait a week or two. And yeah, the whole unproduced, not maximum quality argument I'll go with because sometimes it is true.

the only leak i've ever downloaded was the leak of the latest DragonForce album, which i got months before it was released, but that was only so i'd know the new songs as i was going to see them a week after the albums official release.

If I'm anxious about the album (e.g. omg, omg, have they sold out yet or not?) then why the hell no...

For the getting it early thing there's so much music out there to discover i don't see the need to grab everything new as soon as it comes out. There is plenty of time to get to it later it's rush rush rush for everyone these days.

For the illegality and breaching of intellectual copyright by releasing it early it's not right. Artists should have control over their works, and while i am pro-downloading music (i believe it encourages people to check out artists they would never buy albums from on a whim, creating a further fanbase) I believe artists should reserve the right to promote the release of an album as they see fit and at least reap the initial bit of revenue on the release date before people get there fat asses behind a computer and start ripping stuff to the internet.

At least i know there are dedicated people out there who would still buy the real thing for a number of reasons, and treat leaks as merely sampling works.

it all depends on if i want it and can't wait then i'll download it if possable but it's i'm not really caring then i'll just wait and buy it when i see it at best buy

That's my main complaint with leaks too. Like the Blood Mountain leak. Explosions In The Sky's leak though, the quality is fine.

If I really like the band then I wait. I waited for Lamb of God and Trivium. But if it's someone I don't follow to closely then I tend not to care.

You should have never ceased to wait on those releases. The Trivium one was just terrible. Not that the LoG release was a decent record or anything.
