the longevity increases with good online community + experience but FPS games, like all others, just wear thin after a while

I've got a 360 its pretty sweet. Oblivion is the main reason I got it. And the prospects of Fable 2, Alan Wake, Assassins Creed, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, GTA IV and hopefully Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3!
Although I think you can get all of those on PS3, 360 is cheaper and has more games out, and way more games that look good to me.

The last console I played was a 64 so... yeah, I'm a PC man.
Basically I want something I can button bash but feels like a PC game.
I am probably the blow-shi-up type as I generally drink while I play.
I don't take games seriously, just want something to waste time.

Me and some friends used to play Burnout Revenge drinking games, like if you didn't place you had to drink and stuff like that. After a few hours of this, it loses it's fun when races just end up like ****.

I'd drink while playing Gears but I'm crap enough as it is at the moment.

If you cannot afford a 360, do not buy a XBOX. Hell I'd even support you buying a Wii over an XBOX (although preferably just save up for a 360). Microsoft has completely abandoned it.
