im incredibly bored so i stole this idea
first list the top 5 drummers you've been digging on and listening to lately
next list your top 5 of all time that you love and have influenced your playing and that you have learned the most from
lately: (guys i've been looking more into in the past year or a little more)
1. Ronald Bruner Jr. - saw him about a year ago with kenny garrett quartet... excellent player with the black gospel influence but also a lot of vinnie-isms and tasty jazz. saw a video of him on you tube that reminded me and have been checking him out more lately
2. keith carlock - got into him from modern drummer fest video clips. love his phrasing and style, and he grooves like a mother. tight *** groove on donald fagen's morph the cat. he'll be a legend imo
3. steve hass - another guy destined to be great. great phrasing and off the wall stuff but killer groove too. this guy has played with tons of people already. he kills on this ravi coltrane bootleg i have. check out his site for vids.
4. ari hoenig - another guy ive liked for the past year or so that i still need more recordings of. awesome jazz cat. love his passion and energy, very creative. great vids on youtube of him
5. billy killson - ive always known he was killer, but ive been listening to a lot of the dave holland stuff hes on and he just kills odd time sigs. his rapport with dave is telepathy, i swear.
all time:
1. vinnie colaiuta - what can i say? best drummer ever. my primary influence and inspiration. this guy can play anything.
2. steve gadd - the groove of doom, and the taste of a god. so ****ing musical.
3. john bonham - the reason i got into drums. love this guy and his playing. grooves of doom and so much ****ing power.
4. tony williams - tony the ****ing man. what else?
5. elvin jones - god i love elvin.
i have so many influences... everything i ****ing listen to.. but these are probably the top of the list

My other close guys were Stanton Moore, Roy Hargroove(one of James Brown drummers), Martin Lopez(Opeth) and of Neil Peart. I mean theres too many drummers to choose from, honestly I've been listening to alot of folk greek music from my families parties but while I pick up one or two things listening to the whole recordings they're alot more practical than most the things you learn by "forced" learning(reading out of books, clinics)

yeah i would also include dave weckl and roy haynes

my most recent are:
1. Rodney Holmes-god i love his chops
2. Steve Drozd- the bonham of today imo
3. Steve Gadd- fortunately this year i was finally able to watch some of his dvd's
4. Chad Smith- always knew he was good but finally started to really appreciate him
5. Jo Jo Mayer- just love his style
My All-Stars
1. John Bonham- i know hes your generic influence but he really influenced me to take drumming seriously.
2. Neil Peart- again too often overused but he was also a player in my development
3. Bill Bruford- Talk about a drummer who is way to overlooked imo. This guy was doing stuff way before his time.
4. Ringo Starr- where would we be with out him He is the ultimate time keeper...restating the drumming cliche that hitting less will often times add to a song more.
5. Nick Mason- a drummer who i feel gets no recognition for his work with the floyd. He has definitely impacted me almost in the same way as ringo by using the "less is more" strategy and being creative with simplistic fills,,,,
anyway those are my lists if anyone cares...i enjoyed making them though so yeah....

I find it rather hard to rank drummers overall, especially across genres...but I'll try.
Lately:
1) Manu Katche. (Can you tell? :p) Guy is freaking incredible...really nice feel, dynamics, and chops to boot. His most famous stuff is with Sting and Peter Gabriel ("In Your Eyes" is a nice example), but he does quite a bit of jazz and fusion, and his solo records are actually really sweet...not just because of his awesome drumming, but because they're actually good songs. Check this video:
http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/manukatche1.html
2) Sean Reinert. This guy's actually one of my all time favorites, but lately I've been especially Sean crazy...mostly from listening to Aghora's self titled. The guy has probably one of the best feels ever as far as "metal" drummers go (I use the term lightly), is creative as hell, and has a whole heap of chops in the bag.
3) Brann Dailor. Although I don't hold him quite as highly as some seem to ("best drummer ever, etc"), the guy's alot of fun to listen to. Blood Mountain rules.
All time:
1) Danny Carey. The man....probably my single biggest influence as a musician.
2) Gavin Harrison. Also the man.
3) Tony Williams. Was the man.
4) Paul Motian. Probably my single biggest influence as far as jazz goes, next to Tony. Kinda depends upon what I'm going for, as those guys are night and day. Still, his stuff with Bill Evans was downright phenomenal.
5) John Bonham/Martin Lopez/Vinnie Colaiuta/Steve Gadd/Gene Hoglan/Sean Reinert/Antonio Sanchez. I cheated. Couldn't decide between them. All had tremendous impacts on me musically and I would count each as a major influence.

Well, that's just it....I listen pretty evenly to jazz and metal, and I could easily name 5 for each. Although there are certain characteristics that go across the board, many times jazz drummers will influence me in completely different ways compared to rock or metal drummers, so it's hard to rank one over the other.

Jojo Mayer's Nerve is what has really put him on the map recently, although I'm pretty sure that most people are just watching clinic videos and drummerworld.com clips.
antonio sanchez is pretty sweet but lacks original voice
Honestly, IMO what he lacks is a good regular band to play with. Sanchez needs to get his *** out of Metheny's band pronto, I don't care how much money he's making. His solo/clinical stuff is brilliant but it's far too advanced to be applicable to Metheny's brand of melodic pop "jazz." Have you heard him play with Danilo Perez? That's some top notch stuff!

Lately:
- Johnny Vidacovich (Mad-*** New-Orleans street groove, also, he's Stanton Moore's teacher)
- Brian Blade (His stuff with Redman and the Brian Blade Fellowship is phenomenal)
- ?uestlove (Awesomely solid groove! What more needs to be said?)
- Herman Ernest (New-Orleans great, he has to be one of the best jazz drummers going, watch a dvd called "New Orleans Drumming" and you'll see, the opening solo by Herman is worth the price of the dvd)
- Carter Beauford (Dave Matthew's Band, i really dig his swing-oriented style, groove and chops.)
- Steve Jordan (another killer groove player)
All-Stars:
- Tony Williams (The MAN)
- Vinnie C (see above)
- ?uestlove (gotta repect the simplicity of a groove, though, he has pretty good soloing ability too, listen to the "Bonnaroo" album with Herbie Hancock and Pino Palladino, to see what i mean.)
- Steve Gadd (Ill Groove-master!)
- Brian Blade (Smoothest jazz-cat around)
- Andrew Fisenden (He's been one of my favourite drummers for many years now, i like his fresh style, blending groove and chops very nicely)

I just had an interesting revelation.
I don't like classifying things as best. Sure, their is a difference between a bad drummer and a great drummer, but the difference between two great drummers is not really measurable.
It all depends on: mood, time of day, what you've been listening to, what you are studying, and how long you've been studying.

They're basically a live drum/bass outfit, playing traditionally electronic music with acoustic instruments. Every show is almost all improv, and I don't believe that they have put anything out yet...it's mostly just live recordings and whatnot. An album is planned, though.

:-/ i guess you don't get it
i dont know if you realize but its possible to claim that certain people come out in your playing more than others without saying they are better than other drummers
and its possible to say you have been listening to certain drummers more than others without making it competitive
