Saw Spirited Away over xmas, first anime film ive seen and it was fantastic. Downloaded Howls Moving Castle the other day and that was great too.

Does anyone know any other film, not by Miyazaki, that are just as good, and a similar style. Im not after strange manga, but the same sort of stories that Miyazaki does.

Also, discuss anime or whatever

Spirited Away was a very enjoyable film. I watched it at school, and then borrowed the DVD shortly after. There was a Miyazaki film called "My Friend Totoro" (?), which was a about a kid who befrieded a giant wombat looking thing. It was better than it sounded

I recall a film called "Fireflys" aswell, which was set after the dropping of a nuclear bomb in Japan, and was an absolute classic.

I'm not heavily into anime, though. So my knowledge on the subject is horribly vague.

Hayao Miyazaki is an exceptional storyteller. I loved and enjoyed every single one that I've seen.

I remember being really moved by it. Still a pretty touchy subject today.

If you like Spirited its necessary that you see Princess Mononoke, it's by Miyazaki as well, and just as good if not better than Spirited. And if you like that get Porco Rosso, which isn't really the same at all, but its Miyazaki, and its good.

yeah, I heard Grave of the Fireflies was very sad, I need to see it though.

I think for the artistic style you're looking for, you should check out Metropolis, it's a remake of a very very old film and it's got really charming art, music and a fairly good storyline.

This might interest you as well

There is a rumor that when licensing Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki mailed Miramax a samurai sword with a note reading "no cuts", to underline their "no-editing" policy.Hahah, that's awesome.

why don't you want more of Miyazaki's movies? have you seen all of them or what?

i know that there are a few cute series, instead of movies, i enjoyed. a while ago i was well into anime, i watched cute things like Saikano, although sad, still cute.

FLCL - which is way beyond random.

and then i know Love Hina is a very perverted kind of cute anime.

just a thought.. ^_^

The 2 best anime movies I've ever seen were Akira (of course) and Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Such a beautiful movie, really groundbreaking too.

i can also recommend:

Metropolis
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

All 3 are very different in both style and content compared to Spirited Away, but a great view nonetheless.

I ****ing hate anime and everything to do with it with a passion, so I was kind of surprised and disturbed when I found that I enjoyed Spirited Away.

Probably because it lacks most of the worst features I hate about anime.

I wouldn't have noticed until I noticed you put the "(of course)" at the end.

I'm probably not alone when I say that there's nothing particularly amazing about Akira, it's a pretty basic action movie that i'd compare to Arnie's "The Running Man" in terms of complexity.
The only reason Akira is groundbreaking is because it was one of the first Japanese Animations to be commercially available to the west.

The Akira movie is just okay because it was over-condensed from the manga. It should have been a six episode series (one for each 200+ page volume), but it came out as a heavily trimmed 2 hour movie. The real greatness of Akira is in the animation. All of it was done by hand...

To anyone who is looking for an anime to get into, check out the series Cowboy Bebop. Absolutely stunning, and there is nothing quite like it...

it's really unfortunate becuase there really is nothing like Cowboy Bebop, the only thing I can possibly say is similar is Trigun and that's not anywhere near as good

It's a perfect show in every way...

The animation is amazing, all of the characters have incredibly rich backstories and interesting personalities, the plot keeps you hooked the whole time, the setting is full of life and very complete, the music is incredible (even standing alone), and the direction is on par with a Scorcese or Coppola movie...

It's just breathtaking, and I become immersed in each and every episode...

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are pretty awesome. You'd probably like Samurai X - Trust & Betrayal if you like melodrama with buckets of blood

Those Who Hunt Elves is a great example of an anime that doesnt anger me, in fact, it delights.
