I am itching to play this game again, i had forgotten how much if had affected me when i first owned it back in the day on the original PS1. Some cheeky bugger stole it off me at school though so now i only have the case.

Anyway i remember how much it scared the sh*t out me, inspired by the scariest moments in games thread i've decided to track it down again. I've read the Wikipedia page about it and realised all the references to horror novels and movies that had gone over my head in it are so bleedingly obvious now i've encultured myself in the genre a bit that they add a nice touch to it i want to experience again. I never pinpointed Stephen King's 'The Mist' as a heavy influence but i realise both the story and game instilled the same kind of foreboding dread in me.

My favourite parts i remember are in the school, where you see the painting of the evil grungy looking door, and when hell breaks loose you enter that same room and it's just standing there. The fourth floor on the elevator got me as well. Claustrophobic vibes all around, it was so subtle and disturbing.

I never got a PS2 so I never got into the continuations of the series, which i dismissed back then as having to be absolute crap because nothing could break the legacy of the first. I am guessing i was wrong in this naive assumption. I haven't seen the movie but i really want to get into the series again.

Talk Silent Hill.

One of the best games I played. The school always managed to freak me out a bit.

I played the first one for so long but never finished it. I got to the place that you go right after the boss fight with the cop btu gave up because you didn't have a map an the puzzles were impossible.

I bought 2 for PC but never played through.

4's terrible, it was originally it's own game, but somewhere down the line was slapped with a SH title.

I'm pretty sure a 5 is in the works for the next (now current) gens.

Yes, I'd love to see what the developers come up with. I'd love to see how much more they can do for the atmosphere with these new systems (considering how well they did starting out on PS1 I can only imagine the possibilties).

...and I'm just ogin to say it now, I gave the SH movie 5/10 (on IMDB), wasen't done terribly, but it wasen't done great either. I felt like whenever a monster appeared on-screen it was like they were making a cameo or something. They were there, then gone and never to be seen again.

I tracked down SH1 about a year ago and bought it. I collected all of the keys in the town, and saved just before going into the alley behing the house that leads to the school. I am still at that spot, owing to the fact that I'm too scared to go on. I know if I try to get through that alley, I will poop myself, I remember how spooky it was from the first time I played.

I've played SH2, and I got pretty far I think, but that was a long time ago. I think I played SH3 a little bit, but if I did, then it wasn't much.

I rented SH4 a few months ago and I didn't really like it at all. It hardly feels like a Silent Hill game, at least up to the point I got to (which wasn't far).

I thought the movie was pretty good. At least they didn't butcher the games like most movies based on games do. The movie had that eery feeling to it, and the music was pretty good. The acting was pretty goofy at times, but it's not like anyone was expecting an oscar out of the actors.

The dog and obsidian goblet endings in 2 were the greatest endings in the series, I think.

Well now that I know how SH2 ends, guess I don't need to play it.

Thanks.

The endings are merely named after their items. And there are more than just those two.

I remember my dad finished SH1 before I did  Such was the game's greatness!

SH is easily a personal favourite of mine. After playing the original demo (over and over again) I bought it as soon as it came out. What a great game.

We took our dad to see the film for his birthday, as he wanted to see it. It was mostly terrible (what would you expect from a b-grade horror film based on a videogame??), but some of the references were clear as day. Such as the scene where the main character is walking through an alleyway - which was designed exactly the same way as the beginning of the original game, right down the placement of the trash cans and water pipes. Same camera angle and everything!

An obvious shout-out to the hardcore faithful :smoke:

I played the first one when i was at the ripe age of 7 or 8 with my cousin and, to say the least, it scared the s'hit out of me.

I never got around to playing 2. But I loved 3.

I thought the first half of the movie was awesome. Directly after that chick gets her skin ripped off, it goes downhill. They randomly tried to pull a storyline out of their ***'s that was not relevant to the games.

The games are my favourite video game series, especially 3 and 2, but I thought they wasted a lot of chances with the movie. I was hoping they'd make more of Lisa's character instead of her cameo, her realising she was dead was was one of the saddest parts of the entire series. They tried to simlify the story too much while keeping the alessa=sharon thing from the game, but replacing the whole cult thing with Kaufman, the drugs, Dahlia being the one sacrificing her own daughter etc with a random christian group. Hopefully the 2nd one that's being made will learn from the mistakes in the first.

A 5th game is being made too, there's a few interviews with Akira Yamaoka around (composer & producer) who's said they're working with the idea of fear in daylight, and that it'll probably be released the same way as the previous games (it'll be a PS3 exclusive in other words, with a 360 port a possibility later on). He also said it'll be more like SH2's psychological horror, and after reviews of SH4, they'll be bringing back the radio and flashlight.

Fear in daylight?

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of The Room, since it dealt with dreams. The music is awesome, except Teisui Ichiryusai can just suck it.

Akira Yamaoka's music is a bit repetitive in this game, but also really enjoyable on its own. Silent Hill 3 had some freakin' awesome music.

Ya I can agree with that.

I never finished any of the games completely, so that didn't bother me as much. I think, as a stand alone ending, it wasn't too bad. But yes, it definitely doesn't follow the game's ending.

The ending is rather ambiguous.

It definitely leaves open a spot for Gans and Avery to continue.

I bought 4 a few months ago and it was okay, haven't finished it because it was just a loop of 4 or so worlds which pissed me off. I downloaded SH1 and played it via a PS1 emulator and got up to the school but then went back to Uni and haven't finished that either...

I should have bought 2 and 3 when I got 4, it only would've cost me another $25 for the two of them.

:sigh:

The game(s) any good?

Of course the movie sucked if you've never played the games.

I'd say the first three games are some of the best of the last 10 years. The fourth is a pretty good game, just different from the first three.

I still haven't seen the movie, and to be honest I'm not sure I want to after getting so immersed into the plot of the series.

Has anyone else loved the plot to these games so much that they sought plot analyses and FAQs?

Start at the beginning, it may look a little dated but it's still got that spark.

There is an unofficial PC version available for download, search torrent sites for it. Works a treat, it's really best if you have a PC controller to use it though.

I played 2 first, and hated all the random wandering and trying every door, but loved the atmosphere. Then I hated my ending and didn't play again for a while.

Then I got 3 and preferred it. Same atmosphere but fewer doors and a better story.

I got 4 recently but havn't finished it yet. It's not nearly as gripping.

I actually really liked the movie, and I'm looking forward to Sh5.

Ya, SH4 is just....different. I don't like it so much.
